Getting it started once, no problem. I would be really impressed watching how the anti locks work stopping it.

Only problem is finding someone with a Tourag that's will to do it.

I think that's pretty impressive.......who cares if it was gutted or what!! Yeah granted it's not a all MIGHTY Dodge, but still for a VW to pull something like that is impressive to me!!

i really am not that impressed, here is why, they had to add fricken balast. I say do it in stock form, and then you have something. Just like the Dodge, it might not pull it in 2wd but a 4wd, most likely would, because of the traction to the front tires added by the weight of the engine.

im not impressed with it at all. some of the things he pulled like the utility pole and the minivan i could do with my jeep.

heck, i moved an empty 2500 lb. trailer with my jeep that is rated for 2000 pounds. now that to me was impressive.

pullin the combine was pretty good.

stock 215hp 12v cummins pull around bombers that swarf a 747 on military bases, and they are shortened with 7.XX:1 gears. the larger tugs you see on runways use small 4 and 6 cylinder diesels to move planes.

the only thing suprising is that they did it with a stock rear end and suspension.

They didn't HAVE to add balast. That was just to show off the weight capacity. Like I said before, he was only pulling with about 730 pounds of force. Actually with some friction it might be 800-900 pounds. The car could easily do that with stock weight. He wasn't flooring it. The tires were not going to spin. Yea, it's not that this is impressive to people, it's just unusual. People don't think about pulling 747's. The guy even said the car had something like 310 hp. You don't need much power to pull a plane. He wasn't even producing 310 hp to do it.

This is pretty simple physics. Of course, if your truck has more power and mass, you could pull that VW. I don't think they are trying to out-do CTD's. It's just a pretty good little car.

I dunno...didn't he say that they added 4.3 tons of ballast?!? Full size duallys aren't even rated for that. I am pretty sure that 8600 lbs is even more than it's rated tow capacity. Maybe I missed something tough. I remeber that ad with a full size dodge/cummins pulling that monster dumptruck on dirt. That was impressive..

and no comments from our local sled pullers?
Time to put it in the dirt and hook up a couple thousand pounds of sliding weight.

This reminds me of the old Toyota commercial where they would pull a ship with the truck.

All things considered, Its pretty cool what they did. Plus you have to give props to VW and the tyre (UK) companies for even letting a stunt like this go down. I don't think anyone would let this happen in the US, at least on tv that is.

As for the toureg, if they weren't priced so that only people who can own 747's can afford them, I would actually take a look at one for a daily driver. I would think given the power they come with stock, you could bomb them some and get a good bit more power from them. I think that would make for some fun with the ricers and a comfortable daily driver. Good in the crummy weather too with 4wd.

Just my oft mis-informed .02 cents.

As stated, it isn't very impressive to pull lots of weight given proper traction, gearing and no slope. I watched a top gear video of the Toureg, and was impressed with the torque and HP numbers and it gets 20mpg. The reason I would never get a Toureg is because it is made by VW. Everything about VW has poor reliability. The thing will have major problems before 100,000 miles even if you baby it. European cars are currently rated poorest reliability followed by American cars.

Ive always liked them v10 TDI Touregs. Thats impresive to pull with a stock anything not made to pull it. I seriously dought any of our trucks would pull it with out balast. Maybe, but i dought it. If I could aford on I would get on for the wife to drive but they are WAY to expensive.
