Looking For A Tractor
Hey guys,
Im looking for a good tractor that can be used to mow my lawn, cut down brush and move some dirt.
I doubt I'll be in the price range for new.
So, Ive been looking at the tractors like the Ford 8N and 9N.
Something like this looks to be the rigth size for the duties mentioned above, but I'd like to get some opinions out there.
Id like to get something that has a 3pt, and PTO so I can pull a finish mower, a box blade, a brush hog, and maybe a front loader (front loader is lower priority).
Im trying to stay in/around the $2,000 ~ $2,500 range.

Here's my suggestion...
KEEP LOOKING
and dont assume those nice little 8n's are good or practical little tractors.
No independent hydraulics, pto MUST be running to use the 3pt on them. VERY bad with little kids around. If you like the little Fords, move up a few years, I beleive the Jubilee was the first year with independent hydraulics. Just cost you 500 to 1k more and you get more Hp, and a LOT more usefull tractor. Just my two cents worth, so take it for that.
Good luck, and oh yea, I've got a nice 1650 Oliver Im thinking of selling so I can get a little tractor with a loader on it.

Thanks Duane,
I am not set on the Fords. I only used that as an example of the size tractor that Im looking for.
Ive also been looking at a used Deer at the local JD dealer and a Kubota that is for sale on a corner near me.
Thanks for the input Duane, I'll keep that in mind as I look around.
Need to do something soon as my yard is looking pretty shabby.
Rich.

How about a Ferguson To-20?
I only ask because I have an "extra" one at the house that I would like to get rid of. It was going to be a fixer upper, but I have way too many projects. They are a little bit "bigger" than the 8N's (couple of horses) I think around 24 as opposed to 20. I use one to pull a finish mower around now, and does a pretty good job of it.
If interested PM me and we can talk.

Thanks guys,
I dont want this to become a classified want/for sale ad.
If you guys have leads, please keep these limited to PM's.
Ive started this thread to learn more about tractors, as Im a novice at this and need pointers as to what fits best for my needs.
Thanks guys

For what you are going to use it for I would look at a good used Kabota. GREAT resale. All you need is 15-25 HP diesel in a 4x4. The gearing on these new tractors is really great. Puts all HP to the ground.
The Ford stuff is hard to sell as it is outdated technology. Don't waste your money. Get the right tractor first. You bought the right truck first. Don't screw up now and buy a Ferd!

But, that wasn't the intent of the post anyway. I sure didn't mean to turn this into a wanted ad post. Sorry.
If you are looking for a lawn mower tractor, a 8N or similar will suit you fine. If you intend to do a lot of dirt moving etc, you probably want to look at something that at least has power down hydraulics, as there just isn't enough weight to one of those tractors to do too much. The nice part about the older tractors is that they are simple to the extreme. Almost anyone that can turn a wrench can keep them running. Of course, if you are comfortable with our trucks and wrenching on them, you'll probably be fine with any tractor that you choose. Good luck in your search!
I have a similar opinion like DuaneWKKC, 8N/9N are nice tractors, but no live PTO, no live hydraulics, no hydraulic outlets, etc. Nothing wrong with them, got one at home in fact, they're just not as full featured as a newer tractor is.
Massey Fergenson 35/135's come mind. Ford 600, 601, etc tractors, and the 2000's are just a hair bigger than a 8N, but with live hydraulics as a minimum and some have 2 stage clutches for a live PTO. Its very inportant that these be adjusted properly otherwise they don't work right.

Yeah, right now, half our yard is dirt, the other half is grass.
For now, Id like to keep the 2nd half dirt.
This will probably require me to drag around a box blade once a month (or so) to scrape up the weeds.
Then, as I mentioned, a finish mower for the lawn.
What Im trying to prevent is having to buy a sit down mower AND a tractor when/if I can do both jobs with one machine.
Im fairly new to world of tractors, so Im still steep in the learning curve of tractor terminology.
Thanks guys,
Rich

I like the older fords, like the 2000 mentioned before. We have a 4000 and that little sucker will do everything on the farm that is required other than pulling the big harrows when it comes time to do field work. We do plow with it though sometimes just for kicks.
It is also a simple tractor that you can work on yourself. All mechanical.
Do a google search for ford 4000. shoudl yield some good info for you. Might be a little larger than you want.
Just FYI, there is a Ford 8N for sale in central GA for $2200. That should give you something to base others you see on. It is in good shape also.

I just got a compac tractor. I got a Mahindra. It does not cost as much as a Kobota or Deere but it sure can get it done. It also has a 3 year warranty. Don't make the same mistake I did and get a big lawn tractor(Craftsman). I have about 18 hrs on my new tractor that I have had about 3 weeks. Boy are things easier to get done. I have a front end loader, finish cut mover, Tiller, bush hog, and box blade. Take your time in finding what you want and you will not regret it. I got the 2015 model that is 20 hp. Just the right size for me. I thought that it may have been to small but that was not the case. I have given that thing Hxxx the last couple of weeks. Keeps right on going. Several folks around here have over 2000 hrs on the ticker. By the way, a front end loader is a big plus. Didn't know how much I would use it but I have used the loader the most.

I've got a SAME (same as AGCO, Deutz) 45 hp Compact. 1000 hrs on it in 4 years and the only problem is keeping big limbs off the sheet metal
I pull a 6 1/2 ft bush hog, a 18" double bottom turning plow, 6 ft tiller, or a 1100 lb Meyers disk. No sweat. Only gripe is that for some applications, it's a bit light. The extra 1500 lbs that a full size tractor has would come in handy due to traction/lack of it. It's 4x4, 12 speed, all power, and front end loader. Gave $16K new. List was $24,500.
The Ford 2000-3000 series are good along with the Kubotas. The older Deeres are good. It's all in what you want/afford.
