Lookin For Information
I'm semi-retired and thought I may have an idea that would help me buy a new truck; at least have a tax write off. I was wondering if anyone out there knows how to get started in the pilot car service; you know, chasing semis with oversize loads down the highway. I live in New Mexico, but I'm assuming that with the exception of various state permit requirements that the basic ins and outs of operating the service is the same. Any ideas, information or advice?
You might consider contacting a currently active company that does just that service in your area. Find out if they're hiring. If possible, get hired and do a few runs with them. Use their resources to learn more. It's a good way to get in on the ground floor without too much monetary committment on your part.
That's what my Dad did, a few years back. Ran a pilot truck outta Arizona as far east as Minnesota, I believe. He enjoyed it and did it up into his 80's. Unfortunately he's no longer with us, but he loved the variety. He also had a CAST IRON kidney.
Let someone else teach you than decide if you really want to jump in with your wallet.
