Long Johns...

Well it is about time to get new long underwear... I have always had the old fashioned waffle knit stuff, works pretty well, but I am wondering if I think it works because I don't know any better...

I have been toying with trying the Under Armour stuff, but also had a salesman tell me his bro swears by the silk ones... So I don't know what I want. Is the under Armour stuff all they say it is, or does Bass Pro/Cabela's have a store brand that is just as good (or close) for way less (that stuff is far from cheap!) What do yall swear by?

It will be for working outside (not all the time, but I do work out side some, even in the winter) and hunting almost every weekend (upland/waterfowl/deer) And no matter what I'm doing, the weather does not stop me, if I need/want to do it, i'm gonna do it, regardless of a little rain/snow/freezing weather.

Put your waffles under a one-piece Helly Hansen softpile. At -35 Celcius I rarely wear anything more than a sweater, jeans, and thin coveralls overtop. I sometimes have to stand outside all day.

The underarmor is great stuff, but I think that it does not out perform the standard thermals to match the high price!! NOW the underarmor HEAT (For Summer) during Bow Season works Great!! Also helps keep the Chiggers and ticks off. Dont waste your money on the UA-stay with the basic. Plus-----I hope that you do not wear the same pair of long-johns everyday. 5 pairs of UA will be a small fortune!!!!!

I've got a pair of the silk thermal underwear, and I do not like them. They do not warm up the body like the waffle-type stuff does, to me at least. Stick with either the underarmor(never tried it myself, but my buddy swears by it) or the old-school style.

Brand doesn't matter as long as it's polypropylene.

The best ones that I ever had were the fleece lined Morgans. I wish that I could find them again.

You sound like my wife!!!

That was my issue, a weeks worth of UA tops and bottoms would be $500

I was kind of leaning twards sticking with the old school stuff I know works. We rarely see sub zero around here, unless it is in a kitchen I am working on.

Why try to fix what ain't broke? The ol' tried and true waffle knit stuff has served me well since I was a kid and that's what I still use. I spend 99% of my workday outside, all winter long, and I put the old fashioned long johns on November 15th, and they come off April 15th. (No, not the same pair. I have 2 pair I alternate weekly)

One thing I like about under armor is that its not bulky so i tend to were more of that as bottoms so i don't feel like a fat kid in my jeans. but the top are waffle knits all the time

Patagonia Capeline. Warmer than polypro, does not stink like polypro, much more comfortable than polypro, does not get stiff like polypro.

I wear the UA on the top and either duofold or fleece bottoms. the UA is a great top cause it will wick away mositure when you sweat, hence you won't get cold when you take a break. I own a pair of the heat UA pants, great during bow season when it is hot, as someone already said.

I like UA a lot, and I wear the same ones for weeks at a time... not by choice. It has some anti-micro somthin or another that keeps it from stinking. I swear by it. It is a little steep, but I'd pay the money again. Keeps me pretty warm in 20 degree weather, 100% humidity, and a 20 MPH wind. The warm weather stuff is a must, too. I get a cheeper brand that they sell at the PX. All they carry in the cheep stuff is OD green, but if anyone is intrested, PM me, and I'll help you out.

Never tried it, but may have to look into it when I get out of college and start doing more hunting than I am right now. We wear Helly's raingear while duck hunting, and its some of the best.
