XP will always be slow with that little ram.
I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 which is 850 MHZ, 256 meg, 60 gig drive.
It was so slow with XP that i ended up installing Antix Linux on that machine. (Yes i know that machine won't be as bad as mine)
May I suggest a Simply Mepis Linux install on your machine??

I would have to second the use of Linux.
There are several distributions from which to choose.
I prefer Ubuntu for my family - primarily due to the on-line support availability.
But most of the popular distributions will work well on older hardware.
Ubuntu has several flavors in itself - one of which is Xubuntu which is engineered to work on limited resourced hardware.

IMO they should look into Linux, and invest 18,99US$ in RAM eg

You can make this a rather decent machine for office etc with xubuntu or kubuntu. If you are in a spending mood you can buy 2 RAM sticks and you will be able to do some multimedia.

HTH

This will help ..... it's a RAM upgrade. By itself, a RAM upgrade will make a computer improve its performance, and it'll be night and day. XP needs at least 1GB, preferably 2GB, and it'll run like a champ.
