Just Out of Curiosity...

...how many of you either currently have or are planning to get a locking fuel cap? With the high price of fuel these days I have heard a lot of stories of people siphoning fuel or gas out of vehicles and stealing it.

For a long time now I've considered ordering one to prevent anyone from putting something in my tank besides diesel fuel. These days, I'm more concerned about someone taking something OUT of it than putting something IN it...so I ordered one from Geno's today for $15.

Of course, if someone wants your fuel bad enough it's not hard to get. Heck, they could just stick a bucket under the truck and cut a hole in the fuel tank. But, maybe a locking cap will encourage them to move on to an easier target.

So...anyone else planning to get a locking fuel cap??

Locking Fuel Door

Got a locking fuel door on mine. Your right, can't hurt to have one and even though they could cut the fuel hose, or drill a hole, chances are they don't have all that stuff with them. Better for them to see a lock on your gas tank and turn around and suck out the other guy next to you. Just like robbers, they look for the easy car to steal, or place to rob, make it hard and there gonna leave it alone.

I'm planning on getting one. Don't want to take the chance of finding out someone siphoned, even though I know there's the chance of someone draining from underneath. Living on base helps some but who knows what will happen if I'm parked somewhere else.

I have a locking screw in type gas cap on my S-10 P/U. One day I grabed the wrong set of keys without a gas cap key.. Cussing and swearing I went to get my money back and the guy say oh I can fix that for you.. Walks out pulls on the side of the cap and unscrewed the cap..

My feeling is that unless it is a locking door the screw in type are usless..

This was a STANT Cap...

Called one dealer today to see if they had any, was told that Dodge doesn't make them. Called another dealer and they told me they had them on back order. Wonder if the second dealer was selling aftermarket stuff or if the first dealer didn't know what was going on.
Going to check out the Geno's website.

Just ordered one from Geno's. They are on backorder FYI (and it is a Mopar part, so Mopar does make them, the local dealer was stupid or lazy).

I don't have locking gas caps YET but I've already bought some small padlocks. I'm planning to lock my own caps.

your best defense is to obliterate the number stamped on your cap. There are only a few keys for the caps, with the number, you can get a replacement key from any autoparts store. and the cap is useless.

It should be noted however, this is more work than most theives are willing to put into a theft.

I got mine 2 weeks ago, must have been right before the backorder.

Back when I built my bed in 93, I installed the fuel tank filler neck in the 4" square tube that makes up the headache rack structure, right behind the cab. I also installed a locking door to cover it and keyed it to the same lock as the sideboxes.
