Helpful History I Hope

Yessir... if it aint red leave it in the shed... but we do have a couple pieces of green equipment too.

The (CDC) Consolidated Diesel Co. (Whitakers, North Carolina) was formed in 1980 as a joint venture between Cummins Engine Co. and J.I. Case Corp. (Which in 1984 JI Case's parent company Tenneco would purchase IH and merge it with JI Case, the new company would be called Case Corp and sport the Red Paint of IH and be called Case IH's from that day forth) Joint engines from the CDC include the 5.9l and the 8.3l.

From 1988 7100,7200,8900 and MX(except MX305) series Magnums have had 8.3l CDC engines in them, the MX305 is Case IH's current top of the line row-crop tractor and it has a 9.0l CDC. The 5.9l can be found in some 5100,5200, and all MX Maxxum tractors.

From 1988-present 1600/2100/2300/2500 series combines have had 8.3l Engines in them, prior to 1988 the 1600 series had DTI466 IH engines. The new "10" series combines use two different engines the 8010 uses an Iveco (Italy) 10.3l engine, the 7010 uses a CDC 9.0l

So in my opinion Case IH is one of the reasons why the Cummins 5.9 is so strong, if it wasnt for the CDC the Cummins that all of the Dodge lovers have come to love and gloat about may not have even existed. And too the 5.9 wouldn't have been as sucessful as it is seeing as it was designed for a Tractor which turned up 2100 to 2300 rpms all day long for 14 or more hours under maximum load. To my own displeasure I cant say that all Powerstrokes "cough cough 6.0" were built with the same thoughts in mind. So I dont thank Dodge, or Chrysler, or even Cummins for the 5.9l in the Dodge's. No, I thank J.I. Case/Case IH for needing and engine and forming the CDC! And that is also why I have no reserves in saying at its core the new 6.7l will be just as good, once any, if any, minor kinks are worked out, because I know who asked the CDC for a new midrange tractor engine, Case IH. But I bleed red anyway.

John Deere used a cummins in their 8960 4 wheel drive. And at that time that was their Big Dog
It was a good pulling tractor (until the imput shaft snapped on the tranny)

AGCO Gleaners run the 5.9 Cummins, and so does our Case 1150 dozer. And two pickups and...... lol I still have more experience with JD but I am a big MF fan myself.

I love my cummins, but I would love even more to have a JD 466 or 496 under the hood. The 466 is the stuff legends are made of. Can't tell you how many we've had over the years, but it was (and still is on the used market) a dern good engine. The 496 seems to be following right in the footsteps of the 466, but I think its on the way out due to the new 9.0L w/ VGT tier 3 engine.

How many of you knew that Deere also built a 5.9L engine? I ran a 544E loader with one in it for a while. Not to impressive with a worn 4speed auto behind it, but then again, I think it was rated like 175 horse or something, lots of room for improvement there.
