jack recommendations

I just bought my 99 2500, 4x4, CTD, quadcab, longbed. Love-it. Recently, I was doing maintenance and realized that my shop floor jack (2 1/2 ton) didn't quite cut it for this truck -DUH!!! (8800# GVW, I wonder why???). So now I'm going shopping for heavy duty floor jack and jack stands. Any recommendations as to what is adequate? I don't want to overbuy since these HD items are high dollar, but I do want something that's safe. Obviously, the truck weighs 4.5 tons, but I'll only be lifting/supporting either the front or rear when I lift. What do you all use? ???

Re:jack recommendations

Welcome Jay Naz, and Happy New Year,
I think Sears has their 3 1/2 ton floor jack with jack stands on sale right now for less than $100 for the set.
That's what I use on my Dually.

4 1/2 tons? That's 9,000 lbs

Re:jack recommendations

Thanks for the info shovelhead. I was hoping that a 3 1/2 ton would work. Because those 5 ton jacks are about $400. Yes the GVW on my truck is 8800 pounds (according to my door jamb tech. label). Thanks for the welcome. Jim

GVW is the maximum loaded weight.

Does your registration or door jamb show an EW empty weight?

Yep, you're right. I should have known that wasn't the actual weight. I'll check the weight tommorrow.

Re:jack recommendations

I use my 'Made in the USA' 2-ton floor jack to lift my 2500, but only one side of the front at a time. I just throw a 2.5 ton jack stand under it and then lift the other side. I tried it once in the middle. It lifted it, but I thought *I* was gonna give out rather than the jack.
The rear is light in comparison.

Chris

OOPS!!!.....
I thought this was a thread where we were gonna tell Jack how to run the site! :
I'm using a 2 1/2 ton floor jack also. I did use it to lift the entire frontend when I put brake pads on my 2WD, which is probably a little lighter than the 4WD,,,, but as Chris said, you ain't gonna pump the jack up with one hand.

Re:jack recommendations

Sam's has a very nice 3-1/2 ton Michelin jack with a 21-1/2 inch lift, padded saddle, speed lift to resistance for $57. I bought one and it is a really solid jack. Oh, yeah, it has a handle that is about 5-6 feet long. They had a set of 3-1/2 ton jack stands for $24.

Re:jack recommendations

I use the 2 1/2 ton jack, and a piece of a metal pipe for a jack handle extension ;D I do always use a good jack stand or two in addition to the jack when I'm under there.

Re:jack recommendations

I use a 3 1/2 ton from Sears (came with two 3 1/2 ton stands as well). I just picked up another 3 1/2 ton from Sears while they were on sale for $74.99, it also came with two stands! ;D

Tony

Re:jack recommendations

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I'll look around for a 3 1/2 ton jack and stands. I'll start with Sears and Sams. Thanks again everyone.
