I've tried everything...

Hey all,

So I got this knife from my sis about four years ago. She got it from a guy when she was stationed in Georgia (old soviet union) who made it by hand. It is a really cool knife and the one condition he had is that it be used and not put on a shelf. He made them to work with, not collect dust.

So over the past year, off and on, I have tried to put an edge back on it. I have tried everything. Even took it to a guy here locally, he did okay but it is not really sharp enough to work with.

I am hesitant to send it out to get sharpened because it is a one of a kind. I don't really know anybody and hate to send it to just some guy. I really like the knife, but right now all it is doing is setting in the drawer which is exactly what the guy who made it did not want to happen.

Anybody got any ideas????

What type of stones have you tried?

It could also be made from a very hard steel which a normal sharpening stone will have little effect on.

FOr some really good stones, GO HERE , Kind of pricey for some of them but also very good.

stone, steel, and glass.
Altho, coming from a former soviet state, I would be surprised if the steel would hold an edge. there may be some exceptions, but I haven't seen much quality stuff coming from there.

You leave my stones out of this!!!!!

Just kidding. the first thing I tried was a plain old fashioned steel. cut it like a piece of pine.

I did try a set of stones that my buddie has but it just won't put that razor edge on it.

I said stones not Jewels!!

I bet it has something to do with the steel. Do you know anybody that works as a machinist? Most will have some type of diamond wheels for a surface grinder. I have sharpened a few this way.

Its hand made. Same process as Damascus, but not 'technically' the same. The original edge lasted for three years, I used it to feed (cutting bailing twine), and kept it on my hip all the time in the fields and on job sites.

There is one guy in town, he said he really doesn't sharpen knives though.

I currently have an okay edge on it. Just seems that when it gets to a certain point, it just stops. It is probably my skills, or lack thereof. It's really frustrating, I've always been pretty good at it in the past. This thing has me stumped!!!!

The guy here in town uses a belt sander... Look for a hardware store the does sharpening on mowers and such. Send it to me, I'll get it sharp.

I can't sharpen my benchmade... I have to have the guy in town do it.

A belt sander????? Wow, never thought of that. Kinda scary. probably need to get something other than 60 grit.

Tell you what though. I may take you up on your offer if I can't get something figured out here!!!!

You can start with a belt grinder, or go with a cloth wheel(on a grinder) and jewelers rouge (different grits).

Ya, just wish that I had enough confidence in my ability. This is a one of a kind knife so I would really hate to mess it up. That's why I am so hesitant to send it. I may just have to send it to madhat.

He seems pretty trustworthy. just kidding please don't ban me!!!!

I guess this should be considered my FAIL

Go to a gun show or a large stock show they usually have professional knife sharpeners that get a booth there that will put a edge on nearly anything and typically only charge like $2-5 a blade.

Ya looks like a cool system, I just have never had real good success with the tip getting that sharp with a 'draw' type sharpening system. Is the lansky different?

Oh ya, what lansky set up do you have, there is 5 or 6 on their site...
