Internet Connection Questions
I'm finally living in town so I have most all internet options available in a town of about 20,000 population. So far looks like wireless is my best chance in the way of service. $150 for installation and equipment and 26.95 a month + tax for a 128K connection, 35.96 for a 256K, 44.96 for a 512K. My question here is what connection will be worth while? I'll download some music and maybe some TV feeds on like Amazon, might eventually want to play multiplayer on PC or X-Box.
Other internet possibility is the Sprint wireless card, who has pro's and con's with those?

quic search shows this company providing service in your area..... http://www.northlandcabletv.com/step...nville&atype=1 anything with a video in it, needs the fastest you can afford to watch comfortably........ I am so used to high speed now that to go to low speed I would have to switch to decaf first, and that ain't happenin. see if any cable providers offer cable, phone, and internet service for a package price....... ave yourself a bit of money and have viturally unlimited calling. wireless seems a bit extreme and pricey for what you can get out of it.
I live in a rural area. (I live on a square mile of land, not a lot of neighbours)
I got High Speed now!

and I'm thrilled!
Mine is one of those microwave deals, thing on my rof looks like a pizza box, picks up a signal from the top of a grain elevator in town.
Sorry I don't know how fast it is, when I roll over the connection thing with my mouse it just says connected at 100Mbps.
But it sure seems fast to me!

I just di a speed test at www.speedtest.net 4629 kb/s
I have no idea if that is good or bad.
I think it's pretty good for a pizza box on my roof!

Are you back in Big Spring? If so, you need to go with Suddenlink Cable internet, its the fastest available around here I believe. You can then add a wireless router and have wireless. Let me know if you need some help.

txfiremedic My parent's are using Basin-net for theirs and theirs is wireless. And no, I'm back in Stephenville.
I don't have cable or phone other than my cell (Alltel) and I'm wondering if I actually do want any TV channels, my laptop isn't set up for TV and I don't have a lot of room for one. Is there a TV adapter card that would fit in the PCS slot?

Wow, using that test, looks like downloading is still better done at the college, 8700kbps download and 500 kbps upload. And that's a good 20 feet from the building on a fair connection don't know where the router is in relation to the building.
To get cable internet you wouldnt need anything special, the cable co. will provide you with a modem that the cable plugs into and then from that you would just run a cat 5 to your computer or plug in a wireless router to it and have wireless.
I'm running 3mps, which is probably faster than I need browsing forums and doing e-mail.
With Embarq, I did the package local, long distance, and DSL. It might have been a special, but I think their basic router/modem was free with no installation fees (you just install yourself).
I asked about a wireless router/modem, and I think it was like an extra $45 to buy the 2Wire, so I went with that since I've got a laptop...
