Get yourself a RAM mount model #RAM-B-111 from any ham radio source. RTV the ball mount to the underside of the upper dash just above the fan control. Clamp it in place until the RTV cures, then attached the arm and mount. It looks like it will work great there, and is very visible. Pix when I get mine done.

I have to give myself a pat on the back for this one. 8) This has to be the best install I've ever done. There just isn't anybody around to test it out. 10 and 6 are closed too. I used a RAM mount RTV'd to the dash. Cable enters the dash via a notch I put in it. Works great and is really easy to twiddle the *****.

Whats that thingy up on the dash??? Are you running APRS?

 

It's my Garmin GPS V. I don't leave home without it. ;D I'm not currently running APRS, but I have the Kenwood TM-D700 that has the built-in TNC. I had planned to put a weather station on the air and had just got it running, but then 2 years ago I moved and every thing has been packed away since. It sure would be easy to link the GPS to the FT-8900. It has a TNC input. Just need the TNC. Wonder if they make a mobile unit? I'll have to check my HRO catalog.

 

Here's a question for yall. I plan on getting a 40 ch. Cobra CB radio and dual whips. Nothing big, maybe some 3' ones mounted behind the cab. What would be the best way to mount these to get the best signal and how would I set them up? Any suggestions? I've never dealt with CB's before so I thought I'd ask the experts. I'm going to A&amp;M next semester and it's a lot easier to talk with the CB's than cell phones. Not to mention cheaper.

 

Bigblue, go do a search at ARRL.ORG for Technician License. Then you can talk on a real radio. Mobile's and walkie-talkies.<br><br>Cash outlay will be the same as a CB. A study manual is about $20.<br><br>Cheaper? It is if you don't catch the bug.

 

Tom. sounds like you need to do some unpacking?? An old Navy buddy has a Kenwood TM-D700 in his CTD RAM; he plays with the APRS back and forth to work and says its great. One of these days' I'll have him take me in with him so he can show me how it works. I do think that the Kenwood is one of the more cost efficient ways to do APRS. <br><br>We ran HF APRS on the boats up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Another one of Bob's creations.

Gary, if your grid heaters ever go on the blink, you could probably wire the coax in their place and use the PTT button to warm it up in the morning! Do the lights dim?

Haven't noticed any RF noise due to the truck yet. But only operating UHF/VHF.
