I picked up an IC-2720H on Saturday. I couldn't find any easy spot to mount the faceplate either, so I ended up velcro-ing it on the top of the steering console between the hazard light switch and the speedo plastic. Radio mounted under the driver's seat. Using a magmount antenna for now.

Faceplate does obscure the grid heater dash light, and I have to sit up a bit to see the odo - and neither of those are showstoppers.
I think I found a good solution to mounting the control heads. Get yourself a RAM mount model #RAM-B-111 from any ham radio source. RTV the ball mount to the underside of the upper dash just above the fan control. Clamp it in place until the RTV cures, then attached the arm and mount. It looks like it will work great there, and is very visible. Pix when I get mine done.

Look at this sweet installation!......
I have to give myself a pat on the back for this one. 8) This has to be the best install I've ever done. There just isn't anybody around to test it out. 10 and 6 are closed too.
I used a RAM mount RTV'd to the dash. Cable enters the dash via a notch I put in it. Works great and is really easy to twiddle the *****.

Re:Installing ham radio gear in these things......
It's my Garmin GPS V. I don't leave home without it. ;D I'm not currently running APRS, but I have the Kenwood TM-D700 that has the built-in TNC. I had planned to put a weather station on the air and had just got it running, but then 2 years ago I moved and every thing has been packed away since. It sure would be easy to link the GPS to the FT-8900. It has a TNC input. Just need the TNC. Wonder if they make a mobile unit? I'll have to check my HRO catalog.
Re:Installing ham radio gear in these things......
Here's a question for yall. I plan on getting a 40 ch. Cobra CB radio and dual whips. Nothing big, maybe some 3' ones mounted behind the cab. What would be the best way to mount these to get the best signal and how would I set them up? Any suggestions? I've never dealt with CB's before so I thought I'd ask the experts. I'm going to A&M next semester and it's a lot easier to talk with the CB's than cell phones. Not to mention cheaper.
Re:Installing ham radio gear in these things......
Bigblue, go do a search at ARRL.ORG for Technician License. Then you can talk on a real radio. Mobile's and walkie-talkies.

Cash outlay will be the same as a CB. A study manual is about $20.

Cheaper? It is if you don't catch the bug.
Re:Installing ham radio gear in these things......
Tom. sounds like you need to do some unpacking?? An old Navy buddy has a Kenwood TM-D700 in his CTD RAM; he plays with the APRS back and forth to work and says its great. One of these days' I'll have him take me in with him so he can show me how it works. I do think that the Kenwood is one of the more cost efficient ways to do APRS.

We ran HF APRS on the boats up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Another one of Bob's creations.

Here's the setup I've used in my '02 since I bought it - had the same type faceplate mount in the prior '91...

http://community.webshots.com/album/9333024VsiHAwnjCm

Here's a pic of the faceplate mount itself - quite similar to one up above..

http://community.webshots.com/sym/im...6QKJcor_ph.jpg

If you follow the top pointer, you will see I also run a 500 watt solid state amp in my truck - all pictured - I run dual antenna mounts attached to each side of my fuel/tool box, normally set up for 40/20 meters - all connected via a single feedline so no antenna changing or switching is required - also now have a 2/440 Diamond mobile antenna connected for those bands...

Haven't heard any comments on RFI interference to engine electronics from this thread, but I had significant problems caused by my Comp box when operating on 20 meters SSB, until I did lots of ferrite filtering - now all works great...
Re:Installing ham radio gear in these things......
Gary, if your grid heaters ever go on the blink, you could probably wire the coax in their place and use the PTT button to warm it up in the morning! Do the lights dim?
Haven't noticed any RF noise due to the truck yet. But only operating UHF/VHF.

Haven't had occasion to use the setup at night - but do notice the ampmeter drop a bit on transmit - the radio setup pulls about 80+ amps on voice peaks... Had to design and make my own mobile antennas for the power, helical wound extended bases - they REALLY work well, I get as good signal reports mobile as many home station setups...
