We trained and trained and trained our dogs, and if they want somethin outside that boundary, they're goin for it. They duck their heads and run right through. We even put a wire around the pool to keep our lab out, she jumped right in over the side. Took the shock, and ruined the collar all in one leap.

staarma.... getting one installed.

Well, if you get one all you typically need to install it is a lawn edger. Just cut a slot 2"-3" deep. Just has to be deep enough to be out of the way of foot traffic and the mower blades. If you're going across some concrete you can lay it in a construction joint. If the joint isn't deep enough to suit you, you can cut it a little deeper pretty easily.

What about tieing it to a barbed wire fence?
I thought about burying one where there is no fence but then just tieing it to the bottom strand of the cow fence.

They make wireless? I was talkin about the kind where you bury the wire and the dog wears the collar that shocks when it gets too close to the wire, is that the same thing, or no?

I think we're going to go with Invisible Fence. They have a digital version which also comes with 2 small devices that look like smoke alarms you can set in the house and have an area where the dog can be confined to or from. It comes with the install of the fence plus the dude does two trainings with the dog included. You can take the mobile dealios with you wherever you go so that's cool too and the digital ones are way easier on batteries and much easier to program and maintain. The onlt problem is I want the dog to be ablt to follow and run with the boys while they're out goofing off. I'm just not sure if we'd need the fence or not. It would be for a Hungarian Vizsla so it's not an agrressive dog towards people or other pets but she does have a high drive and will hone in on birds already at just under 8 weeks. We have a lot of pheasants and other game birds around the yard and fields though and lots of geese out in the pastures around here at least until they fly South. My problem is I don't want to drop 2k and then never turn it on or use it.

there is another that emits a signal from an antenna. The boundary is a certain radius from the antenna. The dog wears a collar as well.
I don't know much else about it though.

Dont waste your money on having someone install it!!! and supposedly train the dogs. You can do that yourself. Read my post about showing them the boundrys and letting them get shocked. Best advise, by lots of extra flags and make a solid boundry so its clearly marked out and then supervise them for a week or two and your good. We just got a 8 wk old pup and she picked it up in a week. The install is super super easy!!! not to mention you get a install dvd with the kit you buy. You also wont need all those extra fancy gadgets. You will understand after a week or two what i mean.

i got the one without the wires it sets up an adjustable perimeter. as the the dog gets close to the boundary it emits a series of beeps. if the dog corrects nothing happens however if it continues it gets a shock and continues to to get one until it returns inside the perimeter. no problems with them "busting through" that one.

If the dog's still a pup, it should work for you. If teh dog's older and already used to leaving the yard, it won't stop them unless you have a weak spirited dog.
Had 2 Shepherds and a Husky and the one shepherd was afraid of her shadow. She didn't even ned a fence to stay int eh yard. Ohter shepherd would jump a 4 or 5' fence, even with elect wire at the top. Husy would jump the fence/wire too until she got too lazy/fat, then dug out. Bottom elect wire cured the Husky. Bought an invisible fence for the shepherd (in conjuction with fence and 2 elect wires). Didn't work! You could hear her getting her @ss kicked by the elect fence and the invisible fence on her way out!
Finally tied a tow chain to her choker collar, tied to a cinder block for her to drag around the yard. She still made it over the fence, sitting ont he other side, shorted out the elect wire and wore out the shock collar by the time we got home in the evening. I gave up. She never went far, just to play with the neighbor kids!
