They are a solid platform, but used a RENIX engine management system that IMO leaves a lot to be desired, it's a renault throwback basically and can be difficult to diagnose, it's pretty complex for it's era and as such can be problematic. I would really try to find something from '91 or up unless it's really cheap. The cherokee itself though is a great vehicle, I've had 2 with very few problems, my current one has 175K+ on it and still going strong, although the later model electronics are a little hinky, lots of door switch, neutral safety switch, and other assorted common failures (but again that's mostly just the '97 and ups that have those problems and all of them have very cheap work arounds.) I am a XJ nut and will recommend them to anyone with some basic mechanical knowledge (otherwise they can be frustrating.)

What kind of condition is the rest of the vehicle in? Thats not a bad deal as long as it's not a rust bucket or anything. But I am biased, the wife thinks I'm having an affair with my cherokee, lol.

Forgot to ask what engine it has? If it has the 2.8L v-6, RUN, don't walk away, that's the only cherokee I would never consider owning unless I planned on an immediate engine swap, they are underpowered, never seem to run correctly, and leak oil from everywhere. If it's got the 2.8L i would recommend looking for another one, they can be had on the cheap now days, craigslist can be your friend here.

They had a pretty bulletproof drivetrain if it's a 4.0. Lots of those engines sounded a little rattly right from new, but they would go a few hundred thousand miles with no problem. The automatic transmission would be an Aisin-Warner AW4, and are probably the most problem free auto that I have ever seen. They would go as long as the engines.

I believe the early 4.0's were prone to #1 cylinder piston slap. I think it was more annoying than catastrophic. If it is not full time 4wd, check for the vacuum disconnect in the front axle. Can be expensive to keep up. I don't recall the years they used it. If you buy it and it dumps on you, the non-disco front end has resale value to offroaders. If the rear is other than D35, you can usually get a few bucks for them too. Guys will also buy the tub if solid, to build crawlers, etc.

You can swap the later non disco axles in and add a plate where the CAD is located. It is basicly the same setup as the 94-2000 IIRC Ram 4wd axle disco. They word on the street is that the new ram was desgined by AMC engineers that came over when Chrysler bought AMC.

Why not the ones with Qudra-Drive II They have the factory auto locking axels front and back.
