Importing
Importing
Hey,
Looking to come down to the United States in the next couple of months and purchase my first Cummins. Over the past couple of months there have been many topics regarding this situation. So far I have only really looked at Watts Automotive in American Fork, Utah all of there trucks that they sell seem to be lifted and thats were my problem arises. I am sure I have heard you cannot bring a modified vehicle across the boarder into Canada like a lift kit. Is this rumor true or is the mood of the people running the border that day. Has anybody dealt with this situation before.
I would be bringing the truck through the Coutts, Alberta / Sweet Grass, Montanan. Any help on this topic is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Not about importing - however I prefer to buy used trucks as close to stock as possible, and do any modifications after it's under my ownership.
I would wonder about warranty - I would think it would be void unless a dealer agrees to validate it, but if you do what your signature indicates you want to do to it, it would be a non-issue anyway.
I would like to import a TD Toyota Land Cruiser from Canada, but the US won't allow it.

I am pretty sure when Watts automotive acquires the truck they put on the lift, because most of the ones I've looked at all say they have 100% tread on the tires. www.wattsautomotive.com
Someone was telling me the other day that there are some dealers close to the Alberta border that are set up to sell to us Canucks. They provide all the paper work for crossing the border and even loan you a plate that you use to drive home then mail back to them. If they are doing this they can't be canceling warranties.
A few other Canadians have stated they bought new trucks in the US and had the warranty voided by Chrysler as soon as they registered it in Canada. If you read the warranty book it states the truck must remain in the US or it will void the warranty, only exception is for US militay personell on active duty out of the country.

I was told by the dealer I bought from I would have warranty...nope. I have no warranty...whether its new or used...any warranty is void by Dodge.
You may want to search on the net about importing into Canada...there are a few things you must know before doing this. Get it from the source...the Canadian gov.
Also, you need to provide the bill of sale and mso to the USA side at least 72 hours prior to exporting or you cannot take it to canada. It has to be cleared by the USA before it can go across.
No matter what anyone tries to tell you...Dodge will not honor ANY warranty and buying a third party warranty will get canceled or refused upon application as well. I tried that...and the company promptly called me after running the VIN and told me...sorry can't do that.
I am looking at a new Dmax from the USA...that was built prior to Jan 1 08.
If it has 6K miles or is registered in Canada for 6 months [whichever comes first...it will have a warranty.] Anything after Jan 1 08 does not in the Dmax.
Hope this helps. Do your homework.

Importing
I just imported my truck into Canada. Here's the scoop.
Dodge voids the warranty.
Send in proper paperwork to US side 72 hours in advance.
- Call to make sure they received it.
Bring ALL of your paperwork.
- Go to US side. They stamp the paperwork and out you go.
- Go to Canada Border
- Bill of sale
- Pay GST
- Dodge paperwork stating all recalls have been done
Contact RIV and pay fees
Take to Federal inspection facility.
- they install day time running lights and makes sure the vehicle is safe for the road
Take to local insurance office.
At no time did anyone tell me after market modifications would affect importation and I have not read that anywhere.
Easy as cake, piece of pie.

napa169, thanks for the info, just want to know a bit more about the recall information. Do I deal with the recall stuff when I get back into Canada or does the seller(I may buy from Watts Automotive) have to make sure all of the recalls are done before they sell it to me. If I am missing anything more about the recalls please fill me in on it.
Clearance letter from Dodge
You have to get this from Dodge before you do anything else. If the recalls have not been performed, you cannot import into Canada. The local Dodge dealer can get this info for you.
And yes, they must be done before you import.
Good thing it's not a beamer. They want $500 for that letter.
