I think he means they closed the bridge traffic going onto the island. You can get off but cannot get back on.

That could be, I didn't think of that. Where I'm from, we usually shut down bridges when their safety is in question and don't allow ANY traffic on them.

Light steady rain, winds maybe 10-15 mph, storm still 100 miles away ....
and the freakin' power is ALREADY off.

A portable generator is worth its weight in GOLD sometimes. glad I bought a 15k genset several years ago.
Parked the truck in the driveway blocking it so I can make sure my generator STAYS my generator.
it weighs over 400 pounds so I don't think anyone is going to carry it past the dually.
Powered up the essentials, beer fridge, computer, Fios TV,... oh yeah and the sump pump....

Hope others are riding it out safely.
Earlier news reported one guy lost his life in NC when he went outside to watch the storm and a tree fell on him.

We are getting a little wind and rain from it but pretty mild so far.....I picked up an extra 20 gals of gas and Stabil for the generator just in case because where I live.....you sneeze and the power goes out

This fall I am installing a backup generator with a 250 gal propane tank so it can turn it's own self on and off when needed No more running cords in a blizzard at 3 am

My understanding was that the bridge was closed to non resident traffic this am going in and then closed to everyone going in after noon time. but good point, why have the truck packed to leave if the bridge is closed both ways. Thats why I encouraged them a few times to come stay here with me, Im only 15 mins inland from them but the storm surge won't (shouldnt ) be an issue here. I do have a couple really big old tress that I'll need to keep an eye on though.

Again stay in and stay safe folks, even if it doesnt seem that bad, it's not worth going out for anything.

We're having the same effects here in NJ, light steady rain a few gusts to 15 mph or so, gusts from the S at 35 mph is common around here in the afternoon even in fair weather days during the summer, so we'll see what happens.

No you bring up a very valid point, if the winds become strong enough, the bridge wont be safe enough to cross and it might as well be closed both ways, and they are stuck

Youre not only one not thinkin , there were so many accidents on the roads yesterday coming home from work, people in a panic running out to get a years supply of water and batteries for the impending doom, lines out to the street at gas stations, grocery stores packed to the gills, flash lights sold out (what did they do with the ones from last time) same with snow shovels, why is there always a big rush for shovels, do people throw away the ones from the last snow storm anyway.........

Raining harder, but not REAL hard.
Winds around 15-20 mph.

Electrical Power is BACK.

Wifey says winds are around 40-50 mph and steady hard rain @ Casa del Shovelhead.
She has a electric start / propane powered genset with auto-transfer switch.
A 500 gallon buried propane tank to supply it.
She should be OK as long as the trees stay away.
Still, I wish I was there.

Storm seems to be slowing down.
It was supposed to hit here ~1700hrs, now maybe 1900-2000hrs.

Coming right through the middle of us straight up the rt 91 corridor. We had partial building collapse with the last rain storm that came through 2 weeks ago. Can't wait to see what 12" of rain and hurricane force winds are going to do to all the 4-5 story flat roof 150 year old tenement blocks we have. Entire department has been placed on standby, probably be at work all week straight.
