No prob... I discovered them last year and had the same initial thought... What in God's green earth is this huge "bee"... immediately I scoured the internet and my suspicions were confirmed when I saw one of the offending insects flying around my yard with a cicada.

We have those here and a few are in my yard. I've researched them and from what I've read the males don't sting although they are aggressive, the female are less aggressive but it take alot of irritating them to make them aggressive enoguh to sting you. I've killed a number of them so far this month.

Back in the 70's, there were other bees in New York city that were pretty big...

Bees I can bear. Hornets make me smack myself with tools (or whatever is in my hand), fall off ladders, hit my head on metal (if under a vehicle) and have enabled me to run a three minute mile.
