How much for a?
I'd like to make a very unscientific query about costs of living in the US and Canada.
How much do you pay for the following ( including all taxes )

1 hr of work : car mechanic/ bodyshop worker/ vehicle electric specialist
1hr of work : computer technician/ accountant/ lawyer
1 good meal including soup, main meal , dessert, and 2 soft drinks
1 glass/ bottle of beer
20 cigarettes
middle class apartment including heating-cooling electricity, water and whatelse per month
food for one day bought inthe supermarket

Please quote all prices in US$ .

Thanks

AlpineRAM

Re:How much for a?
Not sure on the mechanic bit
$65.00 avg per hour for a tech. is what we charged at my old job
good meal $45-60 depending what restaurant
beer $3-5 per bottle depending what bar & time
smokes $3.50 a pack I think was the last sign I saw (don't smoke)
I own a house, but some decent apartments in my area are about $600-1100/month
supermarket is a rip, seems cheaper to eat out at fastfood or regular restaurants -- about $30 to make 1 meal (seems like that anyway!)

Thanks TPilaske

1 hr of work : car mechanic/ bodyshop worker/ vehicle electric specialist about 65-75 US$ over here
1hr of work : computer technician/ accountant/ lawyer About 80-100 US$
1 good meal including soup, main meal , dessert, and 2 soft drinks Somewhere around 20-30 US$
1 glass/ bottle of beer About 2,50-3,20 (Depending on the bar)
20 cigarettes 3-4 US$
middle class apartment including heating-cooling electricity, water and whatelse per month about 600-1100/month
food for one day bought inthe supermarket 8-12 US$

Looks like life is about the same in the US as over here.
Comparing the income is much more difficult- the differences in social security, taxes, medical care etc are quite big AFAIK. Lots of that is financed by the state over here, and taxes are very high. ( but you get something for it)

Keep the info coming!

AlpineRAM

HEY! how can you only spend 8-12 bucks at the supermarket for food for a day?! ??? You could barely buy a package of lunchmeat and a loaf of bread for that! ;D

Shop labor - $35-50
Lawyers - try to stay away
Decent meal (Steak/Prime Rib/etc.) - $20
beer in bar/lounge - $2.25-$3.25
20 smokes - $5
Apartment - I own my house but I think they're about $550
Food - Wife and I spend about $350/month

I live in a midwest Canadian city of about 200,000 people. Cost of living is quite a bit higher in Toronto or Vancouver.
