Trying to quit as we speak. Because of the Norovirus I didn't smoke for 2 days, I am now on my 3rd. Is it normal for your chest to hurt while in the proces of quitting? It feels like i've been punched in the chest repeatedly. I have smoked for right around 10 years.

And btw, God be with any of you that are unlucky enough to get the Norovirus. For a harmless virus, I shure felt the worst I ever have for those two days.

You guys who quit are heros. It's incredibly difficult, I'm sure. I've never smoked, so I can't really relate.

I remember reading a brief how-to in a "handbook" used by the I.R.A. It tells you how to extract enough nicotine (using boiling and distillation) from a SINGLE PACK of cigs to use as an assassination means.

Nicotine is incredibly powerful. If people knew how strong it really is, they'd never even TRY a single smoke. It's about as strong as crystal meth, at least when purified and refined.
Do whatever it takes to quit. Think about your life. Think about your death. Think about others.

I salute you who have kicked it.

I'e quit twice now. Hmmmmm, let me explain. I've been smoking since I was 13 (47 now) when I snuck non-filtered Lucky-Strikes from my dad. From there, Camel non-filters, Marboros etc... Joined the military and was able to buy smokes really cheap. (Looking back, they weren't doing us any favors) Anyway, I just got fed up with the cigarettes, the ashes, the dirty ashtrays and quit cold turkey as a New Years Resolution one year. That lasted 7 or 8 years when I thought, I could smoke a pipe. I wouldn't inhale (right) and it would only be occasionally. That led to a cigar when I didn't have a pipe - I inhaled those too. Before I knew it (within about 4 months from the first puff of the pipe), I was lighting a cigar and smoking it on my way to work. I'd go through 5 or 6 cigars a day. It got to the point where I became honest with myself and decided if I was going to smoke still, I should smoke cigarettes again as the cigars and pipes were killing me (like the cigarettes wouldn't).

So I was off and smoking again - for another 10 or 12 years. Last year (October 16th 2005) I quit again cold turkey. I was smoking 2 packs a day when I quit. I can absoulutely state the second time was (and still is) tough.

My wife tried to as well but it only lasted for a few days for her. For over a month she smoked outside when she had one. Now however, she smokes in the house again but still doesn't smoke in the car.

I KNOW I still have strong desires to smoke and have even come as close to smoking as grabbing a cigar while at a bar I was at. I am thankful I changed my mind and returned it. I am honestly scared to even take ONE PUFF off any tobacco product because I think if I started again, I'd never be able to quit.

My hat's off and my deepest congratulations to every one of you who has kicked the habit. My best wishes for success to those who are in the process or for those who will be trying to in the future.

For those who have never picked up the habit. Be thankful and realize that those who do smoke - probably don't want to.

I never have smoked so I won't claim to understand what you go thru when you quit but my hat is off to those who have quit.

My dad told me last year that he had noticed a new red Corvette in the local town parade and asked someone who it belonged to and was told that so-and-so's wife told him that if he quit smoking, after a year he could buy a sportscar of his choice (incentive). Maybe a new megacab would help reduce the cravings for some.

Can someone tell me how many packs equal one truck?

I also know that my former boss quit cold turkey after 30+ years and he said that he was physically sick in bed for 2 weeks getting over it. He chews toothpicks to keep his mouth busy w/o lighting up.

Best of luck to all those who are quitting. Hang in there.

Quit in March of 86 -- 3 packs per day ran out one Friday afternoon and said the heck with it and never had another. That was after 15 years of smoking. Still want one sometimes but have not given in even tho wife smokes.
