One of my brothers recently moved from bastrop, Tx to Aledo, Tx. Hes been here for a while now and he just realized one of his Shotguns didnt make the move. What are you supposed to do about that? I would hate for it to get into the wrong persons hands and it be registered to my brother.

 

Any clue as to were it parted ways with him? Does he have the serial number?

As far as repercussions because of it being registered to him, he can always claim to have sold it for cash at a gun show. Finding it and getting it back may be harder.

 

If it ever got registered to him then he needs to report it to police. I doubt they will be ever able to find the registration though. At least if he reports it and it does get used in a crime he won't be in any trouble.

I would just report it. that way if it does get used in a crime, you are covered.

If he had it as a "scheduled" item on his insurance, there would be record of the serial # and he could at least be reimbursed by the insurance co. as when scheduled items are lost you get full reimb value. Just a thought.

 

yup. report it to the local police, they will write up a report. send a letter (certified return receipt) to the moving company that you are filing a claim for this item. you are right- have him call the gun shop for the serial number prior to any communications.

he can 1. file insurance claim but that me end up beign more hassle than it is worth.

2. take the loss off his personal income tax if he fills out the long form (deductions) that way you can also file the time off, postage, and any other costs incurred as a loss.

and FILE.
after 30 days, he is free of jeopardy. (degrees of possession)

Will just report it. Hope they don't throw a fit; why we waited almost a year later to make the report. Will also try to get serial number from gun shop so police will have it. I'm gonna ask him about insurance, he probably will just want to do a report on it. It was a $789 shotgun too.

 

They make you register long guns in Texas???

 

No state is exempt anymore.

 

The place the gun was purchsed from is required to hold that yellow slip you filled out indefinitely. Try to catch them on a good day to go dig around though. Not likely for a report to be made this late without the serial number. I'd do it anyway. Possibly, the gun may be sitting at a pawn shop somewhere. When they enter the serial number, it will kick back a hit if any agency has run it to check the status recently (i/e pawn, etc.). He doesn't have the original box stored anywhere does he? Might have the info stamped on it you need. A good practice is to write the ser. no. down in the handbook that comes with the gun, and keep that in your safe, or lockbox.

Another no, no in my book of rules. I don't let anybody, especially movers, get their hands on my weapons or tools. These items all get moved by me and only me.
Gun registration is a bad idea, anywhere.
