...Yeah, the good old days. But wait a minute, at the risk of spoiling the fond memories, my own including, I must ask this question: If we turned out OK, against all those adverse factors what went wrong? I mean somebody invented the VCR, video games, paranoia of every kind ( lead paint, asbestos, UV radiation, stress, cholesterol, etc.) Some people even became liberals and got the upper hand, or did we loose control? Time for confession, who meesed up?

I only ask because I want back, not the old days but the values, respect, honor, a sense of obligation to society, PATRIOTISM not just emotional flag waving, decency.
I bet it can be done.

Peter

Where did we go wrong?

VCR, Cable TV, Atari, Game Boy, Play Station and the rest of em, megaplex theaters, shopping malls, "high tech", TV dinners, working moms, over-worked dads, "I want __, I want __, I want __" Get my picture. [undecided]

Like Comatoze said: I want___ I want____ I want____
When we were growing up we had to learn the meaning of "no" and how to deal with it. We had to learn to look inside ourself for answers to life's mysteries instead of the constant entertainment diversion from it that is prevalent with today's society. Since we didn't get everything we wanted, we had to learn how to take care of and respect the things we and others did get. We don't need to return to the good ol' days, just to the value system taught then.

Re:How Did We Make It?
Like Dieselcrazy said, the "I want ____" is OK if used sporadically.

Growing up dirt poor (and we didn't even know it because everybody wore hand-me-downs back then) we knew the automatic answer to "I want___" was "NO! You don't need it." And most of the time, no matter how bad we thought we needed it, they were right.

I have witnessed parents giving their kids anything they want just to keep them quiet and to make up for them "not being there" or "being too busy to pay them enough attention." I got my hand smacked quite a few times reaching for the candy on the store counter and didn't end up turning into a psychopath, pedophile, or Democratic presidential candidate (just a knock on John Edwards - who made his money as a pain-and-suffering trial lawyer).

I remember the rich kids getting drunk and wrecking their cars and laughing about because "Daddy will get me another one." We knew that if we spun the tires off, WE had to buy the replacements and the first ticket meant we had to pay for our own insurance.

What is missing today is a sense of personal responsibility - that is a value that seems to be in short supply. Teach a kid that and you will never have to go get them out of jail in the middle of the night. We learned, sometimes the hard way, that our actions had consequences. Unfortunately these days it is always somebody elses fault and society as a whole is to blame.

I'm with MCMLV - "I only ask because I want back, not the old days but the values, respect, honor, a sense of obligation to society, PATRIOTISM not just emotional flag waving, decency.
I bet it can be done."

Well said.
HAH
THIS is a good thread.
We used to have BB gun wars when I was a kid. Everyone used pump models and we had a 3 pump rule. Course that never lasted real long. Funniest thing that happened during one our wars- I shot JD Knites brand new BB gun that he had got as a Christmas gift from his dad right square in the side of the barrel and put a huge dent in it. I think we were 14 at the time and 20 years later, he's still mad at me for doing it

Riding bikes was always a fun part of my childhood, Going to the "dirt Place" to do jumps and stuff, Nothing to do in the house, No video games and only a few channels, no "cartoon Network" Cartoons were on saturdays only!!
we had a jungle jym out back as well as a fort and monkeybars.
I was brought back to the good ole days of prices, I remember getting candy for 2, 3, 5cent and a Dime candy was a monster!!

My dad had a what would be today considered a convenience store/gas station. the difference is when you were done pumping gas, you pulled up to the drivethrough and then you could just pay for the gas or if you needed stuff, you got milk, eggs, soda, whatever....

Had a old wind up cash register and dad had the only satelite pump for the other side of a island so the trucks that had a tank on each side could fuel up fast.

When it was raining hard or very cold outside we would play a lil game of darts in the basement.
Three of us on one said and three on the other using furniture or whatever for shields. I still remember my buddy having a dart sticking straight up out of the top of his head.
Then there was the pellet gun/baby carriage target practice.
It was a carriage we got from the dump with a lil dolly in it.
Rods Dolly
My parents went a bit ballistic until they saw what the deal was.
Then there was the RAID can puncture dares and the light the rag on the gas can and run challenge.

Course, I grew up in Oklahoma, not up north with the penguins like you Scotty. ;D

Also - Tonka trucks, Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars. GI Joe. Homemade pipe extenders on the front wheels of bikes. Once was running a bike race with an older kid. He was gonna be smart and pop a wheelie cause he was ahead in the race. Sure enough, while his front wheel was off the ground the extenders came off.

Use to take hot needles and poke bullet holes in model airplanes and the plastic army men. Had to make the matchbox look like they were hit by my model train.

Dad use to send me up to the gas station to pick up his cigarettes.
