home security camera system
We are sometimes gone from the house for many weeks at a time. I have DSL and am looking for a camera system that I can access remotely when we are traveling without having to leave our desktop computer running. Suggestions would be appreciated.

What's your address? I'll watch the house!!
I will need to search but I have seen a few very nice systems out there. I forget the name of the one I looked into but it came highly talked about on a different forum. I'll see if I can go find it for you.

you will need the Honeywell DVR with inernet access, they work great for remote login and seeing whats happening.. you can not retrieve any data stored on hard drive unless you spend $$$$$$$$ but veiwing is good. I have one on my house., 4 cameras, I have used it many times to go back and look at "things" no one will be sorry the spent money or time doing this....
fYI I installed a camera inside the house. It they get in I have a real good picture of them

I was looking at this option awhile ago.
When I install mine, I'm planning on just going with the DVR (hidden of course) as the house is three hours away, and it'd be real difficult to get there while the bad guys are are there.
I figure if I can get good video of them, the local Law Enforcement should be able to identify them. (small community)

I got this one a few years ago. It is for our condo 3 hours away. http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=342 You need to purchase a domain on the web site. It shows you how to do it, pretty simple. The domain pruchase is like 10 dollars a year, if I remember right. Currently my camera is down because some idiot (me) forgot to pay the subscription for the domain name. Next time I get back up there I will fix it

Thanks for the input guys! I had almost convinced myself that I was going to have to go with a system that required the computer to be on. Time to do some more research.

There are some nice cameras that connect to your home network or router. You can view the camera image from anywhere over the internet just with the camera name and password using the supplied software. I need to go back and find the information on these. I was planning on putting a few in around and in my home. They also have very low light capabilities with out using infrared lights. I'll try to find the link and post it.

Thanks again for the input! It will be interesting to see what I wind up with.
Lighting is crucial to getting a usable pic of the perp. We have been hit twice in the past year and because of the motion lights not coming on quickly enough the picture is grainy and unusable. Oddly enough, two of the cameras are in plain view and reachable from the ground but don't seem to have ever been noticed. The first two high mounted IR's were stolen off the structure the first week they were in place, caught by the two low mounted ones...go figure.
Also, try to mount one in the driveway to get any license plates and vehicle id's that come into your yard. Low mounted is better for the reflective plates most states use now, we have been having trouble seeing past the reflection with our high mounted ones.
Good luck, Kurt

I have a motion detector I turn on when I leave. It triggers a buzzer at the North Bar in Luther and another at Logger's Landing in Luther. They know if they get there before the others, and corner the perps, free round for the house on me. Then we either take them to Luther Swamp or if needed, or get the 3 pt post hole digger out and plant a tree. Last time as I got there, the poor guy was soked in beer, crawling around as they played a banjo and were poking at him with sticks.

Yeah, they have good food (I usually ger the wet burrito) and they've cleaned it up nicely, lately. Best pizza though is Mineral Springs, just north of Tustin Corners on Mac Trail. New owner also owns G&D in Cadillac, also known for the same pizza recipe and good subs.
