Have to agree. A good tactical light is a very good "force" option, giving the individual a non-lethal advantage. Getting hit in the eyes with 70,000 lumens (Surefire Stinger) can be more than enough to defuse the situation.

It's violent crimes that I want to be prepared for. Someone all of the sudden busting the front door in with the intent to hurt or kill me or my family.

I'm not sure there is a way to defend ourselves against a surprise home invasion by multiple perps. Those invasions like the police use on COPS seem to work pretty well. I don't think any of us would have time to get our weapon, flip off the safety, and fire in time to do much good be it with an auto, a revolver, a carbine, or a shotgun.

That's the other thing. My house is NOT empty during the day. My wife is home with our 18 month old son and a 2 year old little girl that she babysits. I'm not the least bit concerned about our "stuff". STUFF can be replaced.
Right it's just stuff, not so lives of loved ones. A loaded gun (or three) is more of a danger at my house I decided than the threat of an invasion. One weapon strategically placed and secured drawn only after I've determined the threat is all I'm saying.
I used to think my wife depended on me to protect her, my wife is plenty capable of taking care of herself unarmed even.

In my opinion you can't get a better self defense weapon than a 12 gauge shotgun.
During a home invasion make mine a pump.

As I said, it's not burglaries that concern me. That's what insurance is for. Insurance won't replace lives though.
You're right. But I've concluded in my neighborhood the chance of my home being victim of a home invasion is less than someone getting hurt by the loaded weapon that I keep handy. So I keep my guns and ammo at separate locations. I admit if a neighbor was a victim of a home invasion, and the perps were still at large, believe me I too would load my pistol and keep it handy, but with a trigger lock.

I have a 9mm under the bed, a 44mag in the closet, and a couple of other guns around the house, out of reach of the little one. I figure if they are in the house they are up to no good, so I WILL do what it takes to protect my family. All the people who know how to get into my home are friendly, but they also know to make it known they are there prior to coming up the stairs. More than once I have met the Mrs. on the stairs with the safety off. Now I am a big man, and can do hand to hand combat, but I am not in favor of bringing a knife to a gunfight, so you can bet I be ready. I have had the family practice in the case of a break-in, get wife and daughter in closet in daughter's room, and do not come out until I say it is clear. And if they get between me and my family, if I holler hit the deck, because some rounds will be flying. In my home, I am never more than 15' from a gun.

man i guess it is different here, if someone is trying to take my stuff, i will shoot to kill. i worked hard for my stuff and to he!! with stuff being able to be replaced. heck i guess i could replace my wife and 3 kids but i don't want too. it is mine, i worked for it and i will fight to keep it if nessary. people are too willing to roll over in my book. if more people did there job and shot theives on sight there would be much less theft. if someone breaks into my house they have forfitted there life, it was their decision. and here in texas, most will back me up.
o yea i could arm the next group for a bay of pigs invasion. i just like neat mech. toys.

I wouldn't want to be that person either, but would rather them be dead than wounded.

Its me again from the earlier post. I do not know how the gangbangers are in your neighborhood but here were I live it is getting pretty bad. We are about 30 miles east of Los Angeles and I have to go about 30 miles north to get to the snow. There are pockets all over the place where gangs are, tagging on anything more than an inch wide. The city and police try to keep it cleaned off but it is back the next week. Our city has over 30,000 pop. but we are in a county island. If we call the sheriff they get here usually within 1 hour. They say they are under funded and not enough poeple.. OK. Last week I was putting new springs on the front of my truck, it was Halloween night about 2:00 A.M. and I was under the truck when 2 car load of people come screeching up our block (small dead end only 9 houses) they got out and started yelling and throwing pumpkins and trash in the street and yard meanwhile I am still under the truck. I was afraid they were going to push the truck off the stands on me. My daughter saw it on the monitor and my wife slipped out the door. She called 911 also 2 neighbors about the same time. Sheriff gets here 2 hours later. You have to protect yourself. Los Angeles County just came out with a new website (www.lacounty.info) you put in your address and it tells you where the pervert sex offenders are. We have 28 registered sex offenders within 1 mile of my house and I have a 13 year old daughter and my wife at home. This really makes me feel safe. There is West Covina Fashion Plaza 4 miles away and it is known as raper mall because at least once a month some girl is raped there. In our local newspaper will show about every week someone was gunned down usually something drug related by gangs and about half of them involve innocent bystanders and children. The gangs will do a drive-by and shoot up the entire house and everybody in it, also home invasion roberies every few weeks. It is scary... Before my incedent, I always thought if someone broke in to my house or I had a confrontation I would shoot them to incapacitate them and wait for the police, but when I had a gun jammed in the side of my head and they were yelling don't move or I WILL KILL YOU dumb things in your life suddenly have no meaning, you only want to survive that instant. Kept thinking how I wanted to be able to go home that night. Had the full tunnel vision and hearing syndrome, I heard the action and felt the muzzle blast. It actually did not hurt. Adrenelan is wonderful stuff, I was not afraid, I was ANGRY and at that point I realized I could take a WORTHLESS LIFE in an instant. I trained myself to use anger to survive.
There is a place where I used to go target practice up in the foothills and everyone was respectfull of each other, I quit going about 5 years ago when the gangs started using the place to practice. We all had to hit the dirt while they would drive by and spray our targets with a AK-47 FULL AUTO. I am sorry for the whinning but I needed this. On the lighter side Diesel fuel is now $2.17 gal. and my weapons are loaded. Jim.

Philip Van Cleve of the Virginia Citizen's Defense League had a very good come back to a reporter's comment during an interview.
During a discussion of why he carrys a concealed firearm, she came out with the old
"If you just give a criminal what they want, they'll leave you alone".

His reply, "
If the criminal wants your 6 year old daughter,.....what are you going to do?"

Something to think about......ain't it?

I'm one of the lucky ones' who live in a good part of the country. No problems except for a few high school kids parking and other such things none of us would have ever experienced. That being said, only a few of the folks near me do NOT carry.

GP100, 20ga. for the wife and 12ga for me in the house. Numerous other things available.

Only problem I ever had while living here, shot a dog fighting with my daughters dog in my front yard 25 feet from my front door. No problems from the law, but I had the pleasure of getting sued by the other dog owner. (Coon hunter trespassing on my land). Short version of that story, cost me $14,000.

Invite over about 35 of your Hairy-Harley buddies for a 'Beam & Beer' party, (make sure when you start the shooting games you have a good backstop). The next week have one of your buds call the DEA and report a large cache of drugs at your place, (uh, DON'T have any drugs!). Hold WWF wrestling tryouts in your front yard, add LOTS of beer! Give your pit bulls old mannequin arms, (add red paint), to play with in the front yard. Big sign on top of your house stating your prison background along with charges you skated on. Have your wife grow a beard. Pyrotechnics are ALWAYS fun. Throw all your garbage in the neighborhood bullys yard. Stare at EVERYONE & never blink. Advertise fresh, cleaned roadkill for sale. When neighbors are looking, scratch private places a lot. Whistle at ANY woman you see. Park your 1 ton, 4X4, smoke belching dually on your neighbors porch. Practice your knife/ax throwing in the front yard. Forget bathing and grooming. Teach your children/grandkids how to be proficient with the 'F' word. Leave reciepts/paperwork from the free clinic where they can be found. In the middle of the night, gets mama and the kids to fire off everything you have about 3-4 times a week while screaming, "YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!"

At least it works for me.........

I should clarify that the Glock 22 I referred to is my CARRY gun. It's not at home unless I'm at home. The only time there are multiple loaded weapons is when I'm home...in which there is my Glock 22 safely stored in a holster on my right hip (or on the night stand when I go to bed) and the 12 gauge kept in my bedroom (two in the magazine...none in the chamber).

The shotgun is kept with two in the magazine (and 6 more on the stock) only for my wife's protection when I'm not there.

I guess I disagree with you. Even though, in Texas, you can legally use deadly force if someone is stealing a hubcap off of your truck during the night....material things simply are not worth taking someone's life over in my opinion. I don't want to live with that on my conscience. Legal or not...I would not be willing to take someone's life unless I had absolutely no other choice (meaning that my life or the life of a loved one was in immediate danger).

You may consider that "rolling over", but I consider it a matter of ethics and morals.

That said, if someone is so intent on being in my house that they ignored the alarm system and managed to get past the dogs...then I'm going to assume that they are there to do something more than just steal something and I will act accordingly.

Ok, Ok. After rereading my last posts, I sound old and crotchety, forgive me. Maybe I should take up basket weaving?
I remember when your baby was born. Good days these; I know you treasure them. If you're convinced the shotgun cannot be disturbed except by your wife and yourself that's good enough for me.
The three weapons I was speaking of were my own, my wife's and 14 year old son's on that night that changed me into a wuss, if they ever wrote a book on what not to do when you catch someone peeking in your sidelight, they would have used my poor example. A screaming wife combined with darkness, adrenalin and testosterone and having lost items in an earlier theft, caused me to lose my temper, and was intent (yes Lord even hellbent) on catching the guy and hurting him. Until I found him hiding in the bushes, I didn't know he was retarded and barefoot.
Other than guns and binocs, and of course the keys to the truck, there's little home invaders would want at my house so I don't fear an invasion as much as some do. My dogs run free inside an underground fence so we get alerted early on and I trust them. My getting robbed at gunpoint or knifepoint at home is less likely than a college kid attempting a prank to earn fraternity initiation I think, so I arm myself less.
However, rapes are on the increase. If more women armed themselves, and more perps had their ******* shot off...
