I don't think anyone is talking down on Canada we are just well wishers hoping they 'get with the program'.

That's your main defense right there.... Don't invite them in.... You got cool toys in your garage, then shut the door so no passerbys can see. Don't leave your wallet in your truck seat.

Once they figure out you're an easy target they hit you over and over.

I just keep a loaded 12ga Win 1300 next to the bed loaded with 00 Buckshot. Don't have to worry about over penetration, with the buck. My Alaskan Malamute will take a good chunk out of them before I get to though. This is just the tip of the iceberg for my personal protection, but there's no need to go exposing what I got going in my favor now.

Its not even about the guns, he said a guy was thrown in the pokey for defending himself in his own home from an intruder with a kitchen knife!?? I guess your just supposed to stand there and say, come on in friend, take what you like, can I offer you a moosehead?? Then call what's his name from the cartoons, you know the mounty from cartoons......what was his name?

Thats just nut if someone breaks into your house while your asleep and you stab the stooge with a butter knife.....you go to jail?

My arsenal, rifle A, rifle B, XD45 plus hornady 230g TAP, small pistol, Marine kabar, bigger knives, katana.......locations known to me.....and if I have to, compound bow with broadheads. Go ahead, make my day!

A good dog will always make the best primary line of defense. An intruder can beg and plead not to be shot and you might even listen to him, but your dog won't.

Of course, give your dog the backup he needs. A .45 ACP loaded with hollow points or a nice 12-gauge semi or pump full of double-oughts will work well. And don't forget to practice.

As a side note, my wife loves "earthquake drills". She'll start rattling a door really loudly and yell "earthquake! earthquake!" and me and our son will have to take our positions in structural doorways or under the dining table.

She also doesn't like guns. Sooo... I had a "bad guy drill". I went to the front door after our last EQ drill and started pounding on it, yelling "he's breaking in! he's kicking in the door!" My wife, eyes as big as saucers, stood frozen. I said calmly "aren't you going to call 9-1-1?" She understood and snatched up the phone and mimed dialing. I said "9-1-1, what's your emergency?" and went through the drill as I ran to the bedroom. I ran back in 10 seconds later saying "the police are on their way, stay on the phone, blah blah... " holding my thumb and forefinger in the shape of a gun. I faced the door and asked my wife if we should wait for the police or shoot the bad guy in the entry.

We now have the occasional door-kick drill in addition to the EQ drills.

Practice, practice, practice. Make it as intuitive and familiar as starting your car. The bad guy has the advantage of suprise- you have every other advantage including knowing the layout of your territory and the ability to pre-plan a defense and pre-position defensive tools (not necessarily firearms). Use them to their utmost.

If you want to do it right, it's "where's your emergency". Train (not teach, TRAIN!) them to always know where they're at and spit their location out first when calling 911. That's on all phones. The cell gps is a false sense of security.

true not enough people practice, then panic when somthing happens. home invasions are a fact of life every where. sometimes the badguy gets the address wrong as do police responding. i tell my sister and mother that and they just laugh. when my sister was married i gave her and her husband a nice "coach" gun 12 ga for there new house she refused to take it. i tried to give it to him and said just stash it somewhere in your house, know where it is and plan to get to that location if needed. nope fools figure le will save the day. same with my mother she lives alone 56 grew up on a farm and knows how to shoot but will not take a gun. so i keep one there in my old room she knows its there and bitches that she doesnt want it in the house. but hey she hasn't thrown it out yet, so there it stays better safe than sorry. i just dont get passive people or passive goverments. with the world sliding down hill out of control **** will hit the fan sooner than later.

Yeah, it's like that bumper sticker I saw on my truck- "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away!"

Just remember these few key things to personal protection or self defense when it comes to guns,

NEVER use reloaded ammo for personal protection.

NEVER use any hand gun for personal protection thats caliber doesn't start with less than a 4

Another questionable one is the use of hollow point bullets. I prefer plain old ball ammo in my .45ACP. Its dependable as all heck!

NEVER use a modified gun of any kind for personal protection.

a 00 buck shot round consists of 9 .32 cal pieces of steel..........you would be astonished at what they will go through.....if you want non-penetrating safety bullets....buy them........buckshot is by no means safe.

Home defense for me is two pure bred German Rotts. My Puppy is 140lbs and has one heck of a bark on him, enough to scare most people away from the house. My old one is 120lbs, he might be old and slow but if any one were to come through the front door or lay a hand on me they'd defend me in a heartbeat. They've been great dogs and can be big babies but when it get down to business the can get mean. Also I have a 870 12ga with alternating 00 buck and deer slugs in it. Its always loaded and has an ext mag tube with a 20 inch barrel. If I don't get them they better run like heck before the dogs do. I can be some what bargained with, the dogs can't.
