Hey BigBlue, ball drop question

What size drop do you have on your hitch ball?

I looked at a 10 inch drop and it seemed bloody huge, 8 inch looked like it might work OK.

I'll be towing your average 6 foot 4-wheeler trailer.

Guy I'm borrowing the trailer from has a stock height 97 CTD and has a 4 inch drop and he says that is too short for that trailer, but it's just right for his 12 foot trailer he upgraded to so he could carry 2 4-wheelers and 3 dirt bikes.

So, he probably needs a 6 inch drop, and with my added 4 inch lift that would be 10 but 10 just looks too long.

Mine is a 10 inch drop on my new bumper. We hooked that exact trailer up to it and the back of the trailer was maybe 6" off the ground. I could barely snap the ball on. My roommate has a 12" drop bumper with a 4 1/2" drop hitch for a total of 16 1/2" drop and the trailer still doesn't sit level. Another 2" would do it I think.

You all may as well use a longer tounge on the trailer and mount your ball on the rear axle at that rate.

The way Phox worded the title of this thread, I wondered what the heck the question was gonna be. Glad it was about trailers.

Maybe you've all thought about this, but measure the distance from the ground to the trailer hitch when it's sitting level ( or the way you like to pull it) then measure the distance from the ground to your reciever and subtract. Should give you what you're looking for.

I'm just waiting for him to get the trailer.
He has it stored at a RV storage lot he owns.

Most likely just going to go with a 10 inch drop, as that is the biggest readily available, any bigger and I'd have to go custom, and I don't want to spend that much at this point, since I don't have a trailer of my own.

what works nicely..... get a 2" pintle combo or a 2 5/16" pintle combo and a plate.... you can adjust to whatever height you desire. an 8" drop plate, when the hook/ball combo is placed on the bottom set of holes will give you 10", you can change it around to any combo to give you a drop of 10 to a raise of 6..... this is what i do.... very convenient if i use a differnt truck. I will post pictures if you dont understand what im talking about (especially handy if you ever need to pick up a pintle tag trailer.....)

Here are some links....

You would need one of these...
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...Id=7808&R=7808

And one of these...
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...=22067&R=22067

Oh, and that's a 12" so 0" to 14" of drop or 0" to 10" of step up if necessary...

It is also rated for more weight than any other readily available drop hitch that I've ever seen...

Yes, I've seen those.
Those also look more menacing to the Hyundai that's tailgating you.

A bit more than I want to spend at this time though.
I can get a 10 inch drop and a ball for 40 bucks at a shop just down the street.

Well, I picked up a 10 inch drop and also picked up the trailer.

Probably could have gone with a 12 inch, but this'll work.
Drop and ball were only 40 bucks, can't complain.

Can't back the trailer up for crap though.

Betwen the height of my truck, the cross bed toolbox, and the trailer being so teeny,
I can't see it at all back there.
The mirrors are useless until it's jacknifed, then I can finally catch a glimpse of it.

Luckily it's so light that I can back it up armstrong style.

The shorter tounge trailers can make a fool of even experienced backer uppers.
I can tote around my boat or equipment trailer all day, hook up to an 8' landscape trailer, oh boy!?
Having the trailer wheels so close to the tow vehicle makes it tough.

I hate short single axle trailers. You even think of turning the wheel and they jack knife on ya. It's especially troublesome on a lifted truck.
