Helmet Identity

I give up so figured I would try you guys. I had forgotten about this until recently. We found it on some property we were clearing in Nikiski Alaska in 1987. I was using my jeep to rip out the smaller trees and it appeared tangled up in some branches and roots. Searching the internet only comes up with nice looking military style helmets not any rather drab ones like this. I had cleaned it (I know, doesn’t look like it) and it does have some interesting engraving that look like flowers and plants (not military looking stuff).
I assume it is a reproduction but why it was there is still a mystery.
My question is, does anybody know any contacts who can steer me in the right direction?

Definitely looks mediaeval. Maybe you could get in touch with an Archeologist from one of the Universities to see what they might know about it. Maybe from the mediaeval warm period or something?

That looks like an authentic as much as a reproduction. Remember, the Alaskan cold has an uncanny ability to preserve things.

Kind of neat. Took your suggestions. Last night, I sent the same message with the pictures to the archeology dept at the University of WA (they made the mistake of posting their email address on the web). They forwarded it to an unlisted email address of an archeologist who is working in Alaska. He sent me an email saying he is interested, wants my phone number address etc. I will let you guys know what he finds out. Thanks again!

Wow wish I saw this when you posted this....I deal with archeologist all the time, and know quite a few people that work up here on digs. Anytime the military do any work, arch crews come in an do test plots. On the site I am on now they did a dig on a hill, found over 10,00 pieces of flakes, a Awl in perfect shape an quite a few points.
Now get ready for the bad news....What is on the site now where you found that, because it will most likely be dug up. If that is a jap hat very big sig. find, because they weren't known to be there. Most likely Russian, which I believe could date back to 1400's. Anyway though you are about to have a train of archs crawling all over you, Some will be pretty mad that the local university wasn't contacted at time of fine. Oh and you will end up "donating" the helmet too.

LoL, forgot about that movie. As of yesterday the helmet is on its way to the Archaeologist (they even paid for shipping). He said that they will need to remove a link from the chain mail stuff and send it south for testing which will take several weeks. Ill let you know. Oh, he also mentioned the possible Russian connection.

Talking

I hate to say this but it's history, gone, literally . I'm kidding, that's just me though I would propably never get to see or lay hands on it again especially if it had some value to it.

One reason I'm like that is the story my wife told me about a project she done in arts and crafts class in high school. She had created this real nice vase and the teacher was foaming at the mouth over it, (my wife is very creative and talented with crap like that).

Anyway the teach wanted to buy the vase from my wife, but wifey said no I 'm planning on giving this to my mother for a gift. Well the piece still needed firing in the oven, I forget what the proper word is for firing up,what the ovens called, anyway the teach was going to do that for her like she had done for the other students.

This was right at the end of the school year and the next day summer vacation started. My wife ask the teacher when would be the best time to pick up the vase and she replied one day next week would be fine to come up to school and get it.

Well she did to the surprise of that teacher was not going to be teaching there next year and she had already gather all her stuff up and left. My wife tried there for couple months to get a hold of her with no luck. That was 28 years ago and it is probably diplayed in the "Smithsonian Institution" by now or I believe I got a glimps of it in the movie "National Treasure".

Still pretty sorry a teacher stealing from a student.

Tony

You never know when/where you will find stuff here. This summer in a gravel pit we uncovered a pile of 10,000-15,000 year old driftwood. I have prehistoric mastodon teeth, jaw an leg bone of a bison

No your right...I doubt if he gets it back, but I can maybe help him get it displayed at a local museum, or some towns have historical tourist areas that have display areas in them. Most times museums will allow towns to display them now. To much is lost in warehouses, this way people can go see their local history, and universities on occasion can come by, or have it shipped to them for studies.
