Has anyone ever noticed ??

Has anyone ever noticed their oil pressure gage?? Mine has been doing something funny for some time now, but I just am coming to the point of mentioning it. "The engine is Idling, the oil pressure is steady at 40 lbs, now I increase the rpm's a little and the oil pressure drops a few lbs before it increases up to maximum."

It just seems odd that the pressure should drop before increasing. And its just for a split sec. So! is mine the only one that is doing that? And if so, I wonder why?

I think I know what you mean. it just kinda waves a lil then goes up. My truck does this. as soon as the rpms start to go up if you are pushing the pedal down slowely it will kinda go to the left then back up to the right. Mine does that. now if you just mash it it goes straight up.

From what I understand, the oil pressure gauge reads a signal sent to it by the ECM several times a second.
It is not a direct signal from the sending unit.
That's why the gauge has a few seconds of lag time when we fire up a cold engine before it shows a reading.
Probably the same thing happening to you, the gauge is just waiting for a signal from the ECM to make the needle move.

Still the same rules apply, the gauge has to wait for the ECM to signal it to make the needle move.

Another thing about the Dodge oil pressure guages.

The Dealer can reflash the ECM/PCM so it always reads right in the middle, so you don't see those wierd fluxuations.
No oil pressure, right in the middle.
Extremely high pressure, right in the middle.

Keeps those pesky customers from coming in complaining that their oil guage keeps moving.

I think there is even a TSB on it recommending the flash for particular problems.

Chalk up one reason to ditch the OEM guage and go aftermarket.

Shovelhead

So if it needs a signal before it will move then it must get a signal to move down before it gets a signal to move up.

So why the signal to move down to lower pressure?

Not real sure. ???
Maybe it's trying to get a running start?

I don't put too much emphasis on the stock gauges.
To me they're just one step above an "ID-10-T Light"
Anything worth monotoring that closely, is worth an aftermarket gauge.

Right on Ed. I've been thinking about it but thats as far as its gotten. I have a three gage pillard mount and I fine it hard to add another gage. Is there a single gage mount?
