Got laid off...

I knew this was coming

Small company, only 45 employees and 4 of them were laid off today (last hired first fired), Iīm one of them. But due to our system over here Iīll have to work for another 3 1/2 weeks. Iguess the crisis finally got the IT crowd

And then Iīm free

So who wants to join the club?

I didnīt really like to be in an office 40-45 hours a week, so maybe this is good. But on the other hand it means, no Cummins for me anytime soon as I might be going back to University to learn something that I like. But I have no family, no one to care for and Iīm still pretty young at 29.

Itīs all good, just a little rant

I don’t quite understand, is the company giving you a three and a half week notice and at the end of that time you will be laid off? If so that is most likely a lot better than you would get over here.

Yup, "Pulls High Vacuum", but still better than here.
Our company called 4 managers into the boss' office last Thursday....and handed them 'pink slips'.
They've already stated they want 14,000 workers off the payroll by the end of the year.
They also stated anyone hired after 2003 should update their resume'.
We're around 400,000 now.

One year, two months to go 'til I get my 30 ............

Being laid off is a drag. I got laid off last march, but managed to get it overturned into a transfer. So now I work a month at a time on an oilrig off the coast of Angola. West Africa, It sucks. And yet, my company is hiring again at my home town camp. But I cant go back to work there, because now I would have to start at entry level again at home, and throw away 5 yrs of hard work. I'd lose 7 pay grades. So I gotta watch my son grow up on webcam for a month at a time.

Oh well.... it pays the bills.....

Hi,

yes, I will be laid off at the end of march. But I have six days of vacation left, which means 17 days of work left. Itīs the law over here. In my case the company had to give me the notice one month before I finally have to leave the company. The more years youīve worked at a company the longer this period becomes.

Now I have to find something to study at university

Originally laid off 2 years ago, laid off last year....twice, and got laid off January 15th of this year. Got a short time gig teaching welding at a tech school.....but, will be getting laid off in another couple weeks. Running a small biz running a welding rig during times of employment and without. Sure as heck is not easy and have learned to do without A LOT! Even more so than we did when I was employed as an under paid mechanic/technician.

Have gotten used to getting laid off, end of the month issues, "how are we gonna make the house note???", let me see what I can sell.

Good luck Kris, hopefully the economy will start to turn around but all the blabbering the politicians are doing with very little action, or money actually focused on where it is supposed to be going.

Dang that’s going to be a lot more people on the streets. The economy sucks and good people get the shaft because of politicians lining their pockets instead of doing the right thing.
But the down turn was a long time coming and its here so I guess we have to deal with it.
Ed I know you work in some department( I think) of the government but can you say where?
Hopefully I’ll make my retirement with the city; I have enough time now but still need to work for the insurance. If I can make it for 7 years and 7 months I can hang it up.That will give me a little over 34 years in the retirement system. The city that I work for has a benefit that if you work for them a full 20 years and reach age 60 they will pay your insurance until you are eligible for Medicare. Otherwise I will be working until I fall over or reach 65.

I work for the local Telecommunications Company, and have been assigned 'full-time' to a local military base since 1987.
I'm hoping that I'll be able to 'retire', get my pension (Lump Sum), then get a GS'er or Contractor job on the base where I have been for the past 23 years.

I'm concerned about my job going away too. The Corp has put such a squeeze on spending, several piece of important equipment will go into moth ***** soon. Ones I maintain.

Thank you. I guess politicians all around the world are the same
I hope the economy gets up to "normal" level soon, but I donīt think this will happen in the next 3-6 months. More likely in 1-3 years.

@ Shovelhead
400000 people, telecommunication, sounds like a company I used to work at before. But it doesnīt begin with a "T" or does it?

Good luck to all of you !!!

Nope, used to start with an A (our portion started with a C), then (after a divestiture) started with a B, now (after two mergers) starts with a V.

We're getting cuts up here too. The place I work wants X number of people gone, yet they are still going ahead with over 1/2 a billion in new construction this year. Nice. Maybe its the final push I need to strike out on my own. Right now I work full time and have 4 side businesses and its the Guy upstairs telling me its time...
