I use Zone Alarm Freeware version. It's a firewall only without any other bells or whistles that the cost version has. Simple to install and use. It also keeps a log, and it's amazing how many sites ping your address daily looking for information.

Norton with Zonealarm I catch viruses with it all the time.

You would be amazed how many DTR members send me a virus through their email programs. My best guess is they don't even know they are infected with a virus.

All email that comes in or goes out of my PC is run through a virus program, if everybody did this, these email self propagating viruses would soon disappear.

Computer company I work for (three initials) has us use Norton AntiVirus as a condition of employment. We also have a company firewall with a mail scrubber that nukes them buggers before they get to our machines. Symantek makes a good firewall and I have heard McAfee does a good job with catching bugs.

On our home network, which is sharing a cable modem internet connection, we're running a router/firewall unit. It functions as a DHCP server on the "network" side, handing out IP addresses to all the machines on the network. It also closes and essentially makes invisible a large number of ports that might be used for hack or trojan attacks. I'm also running Tiny Personal Firewall. We had some problems with one version of ZoneAlarm at work, so I put Tiny on there and liked it so I'm still using it. My employer holds an unlimited license for McAfee Antivirus, so I'm running that. Also, defending from "spyware" and webtracking programs, I scan with AdAware and run Spybot Search and Destroy, which stops "drive-by" downloading of most spyware programs. Oh, and Pop-up Killer to close any annoying pop-up ads...

On my home Network with Cable, I use Linksys NAT (Network address Translation) Firewall Translation, On PC using XP I use Sygate Personal firewall, Double protection there, I have found Norton slow the machine down sometimes, so I use Mcafee PRO Minus the Personal Firewall.
