The San Juan Mountain area is beautiful country. Back when I was in college, I worked for a summer at a guest ranch just north of Ouray. I visited both Durango and Silverton to pick up guests from the air port (Durango) or the train station (Silverton). I'm not sure what is available to do in the winter, but I'm sure the scenery will be spectacular. Post some pics when you get back.

I figure the roads to Silverton will be closed the 1st of Feb. I go there every Summer with my grandparents, parents, ciblings & aunts/uncles and we camp from August to the 1st of squirrel season (Thats what my grandpa tells everyone - October) at South Mineral Campground and all the locals say Jan to March is it un-passable. My uncle and I have been wanting to go up during that time of the year to check out the difference, but they keep discouraging us. Course we are probably those "Dumb Texans" to those folks.

Good luck with the "She sounded hot on the phone" bit. I have been burned MANY times by that. But if you ever do hit paydirt, what a wild night can be had with someone who is running the hotel and has keys to the vacant honeymoon suite with the hottub...

Have you seen those inflatable airbags for mountain snowmobiling? What are your piggybacking skills like? You know just in case......

well the front desk girl wasnt what i was hoping for, but theres lots of other girls that work at the resort.

im meeting lots of cool people and i have some funny news...

i wanted to bring my ol goat up here becuase i knew she wouldnt let me down, but my buddy really wanted to bring his ford. would you believe it wouldnt start this morning and we had to take the shuttle.

maybe theyll listen to me next time when im talking about the goat and the little warning i gave him about running bio diesel...only about 20 gal in 100 but it was enough for the truck not to start until this afternoon.

its been over 5 years since ive skied last and i was running blacks by the third run. i sure did miss this

what are some of the things I am forgetting and will have to pay an arm and a leg for at the mountain

Thanks

Brett- Take a set of chains and a shovel (just in case ), a tow-chain or ******-rope, a good-sized candle (in case you get snowbound in a drift and can't run your engine), a gallon of drinking water, some PowerBars and a good flashlight.
If you have time for a day trip take 550 north to Silverton then on to Ouray (u-RAY) for some spectacular mountain scenery. You can then come back the same way or via 550 N to Ridgway, 62 to Placerville, 145 to Delores and then 184 to it's intersection with 160 just W of Mancos and back east on 160 to Durango. This will be a full day's drive either way this time of year so start early.
Hope you have a great trip and remember what the old Sergeant on Hill Street used to say: 'Let's be careful out there!'

The only other place I liked skiing more than A-Basin was Purgatory. I LOVE the San Juans. You've picked a good place to go. They usually have around 85" of snow during this time, so you should be in good shape. Silverton will have about 130. Funny thing is, I'm FROM Breckenridge! I would still travel to ski down there in a second.

heck ya! they have it advertised on the sign that they have recieved over 20 feet of snow so far! poeple that have been coming here for 20 years said this is the best season yet. I used to ski in wolf creek which is great also, but i will definately be coming back. the scenery is amazing...we have a 2 hr snowmobile ride tomorrow and ill be sure to post up pics of that also
