had a 3000 propane bill one winter season here in central new york state.
put in a wood boiler then and there.

we have a 100 dollar electric bill (yes, welding makes it go up) for a 6,000 sq ft house and 2400 sq ft barn. use about 20-30 cord during a six month season or more. and the wood is free

built our house, backfilled with stone (traps air for better insulation than clay)
have to get the new windows though- tried to do the bargain brand ones about 15 years ago. you can feel the difference.
think propane here is 3.29 a gallon..

glad we enjoy cutting wood. propane back up is handy and we use it for cooking. never heat with it again though..
