home heating oil?????
will my truck run this ,it looks like off road diesel,,,do i need to mix it or what,,,i just got 100 gallons offered to me ,,but im not sure about it ,,,any help would be great ,thanks guys....

Heating oil is identical to diesel. Just no road taxes. Hence it ain't legal.
As for the ulsd part, Most places have switched completely to it and the LSD isn't available anymore. At least all the way up here....

Around here, Crowleys' tacks on road tax if they deliver it. The last time I went to pick some up it was the same price as #2 at the pump. So I went to the pump and used my $1 a gallon off at Fredies.
Standard Diesel = 5000ppm sulfur (0.5%)
Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD, but commonly mistaken for ULSD) = 500ppm sulfur
Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) = 15ppm
LSD (500ppm) came into affect for on road vehicles in late 1993. For offroad diesels in 2007, and for marine/locomotive diesels.
ULSD (15ppm) came into affect for ALL on road vehicles in 2010, but was offered in late 2006 and was required for all 2007 models and newer diesels. In 2010 it was required for all offroad diesel as well, and will be for locomotive and marine diesel in 2012.
I believe home heating fuel is usually limited to 3000ppm, but it's different for each state. Maine is 1 of 5 states that apply strict air rules before the rest of the country, and they are just starting to require 500ppm #2 heating fuel by 2014, and 15ppm in 2018.
So the #2 heating oil has much more sulfur in it than normal offroad diesel. It WILL not hurt your truck. If you look at the time table, you'll see our trucks were designed around the old, 5000ppm diesel. It actually is a better lubricated fuel vs. newer, drier, ULSD.

When I was broke in college, I put diesel in our tank all the time since I was required to buy 100 gallons at a time of #2 heating oil.
It's fine. But most heating companies offer a lower rate if you pick up your own fuel. The delivery costs money and they tack on a bit for that. Not all companies do that though.

I can get heating oil $.60-.70/gal cheaper than diesel even though it is EXACTLY the same fuel from the same refinery. There is a self serve HO pump near the airport that is $.25-.30/gal cheaper than delivery.
Up here it isn't dyed.
I retract my statement and will agree with DZLDamon. I think he has it correct, and I was off. I remember when the coast gaurd was starting checks on us on the water. It must have been when it went from high sulfer to low, not ultra low.
Being that I'm a tanker driver in Oregon, all diesel here is ULSD. The red die that is injected into the diesel as we load at the loading rack makes it tax exempt. If you feel lucky about cheating the tax man out of road tax that pays to fix the roads, good luck. I hear the fines when caught are pretty hefty.
About a month ago my buddy was pulled over in his Audi Q7 (diesel) by a California Highway Patrol that dipped his tank to check the color. I'd heard about this happening in other areas of the county, but never a first hand account. Diesel is $4.25 a gallon here in N. California, so I would assume the CHP will be doing more of this as the temptation to cheat is getting greater. Not sure what the fine is and I don't want to find out, so I'm just going to take it in the 'ol poop chute at the pump like everyone else.
