garage space

Hey all,

Were building a new house right now (foundation is in). I hadn't planned on having a 4x4 truck, so I'm wondering if It'll fit OK in a 7' high door opening. The truck in question is a '03 2500 Ram 4x4 QC/LB with the 265 series 17" tires. A quick measurement shows the truck roof to be approx 6''6" to 6'7" in height.

This should clear OK as long as I don't put a fiberglass cap on it?

I'm limited to a 9' wide opening, so if necessary, I'll simply have to swing the one trailer tow mirror in to back in.

I'd like to go to an 8' high door, but head clearance is in question with low clearance OH door tracks and still be able to fit an opener.

I've got a standard opening double (7' X 16') door and my 03 2500 4X4 QC LB, 265 series, 17" tires fits OK.

Looks like you'll be OK.

Congrats on the new house too.

Go measure a like truck yourself. Do NOT take the salesman's word for it. I remember many moons ago, my ol' man was building a brand new garage in preparation for a new GMC conversion van. He went down to the dealer to inquire on the height of the van and made the door 2 inches higher. Problem was, the dealer forgot about the vent on top of the van. Dad went to park the van and ripped the vent right off the top of it. DOH!

The measurement I gave was taken on my truck sitting in my driveway .

I guess the issue comes down to either keep the 7' high door and be able to fit the truck with no cap, yet have an opener, or go to an 8' high door with low clearance tracks, but risk being able to use openers on any of the three doors due to insufficient head room.

Go bigger!
It's easier to fit a shorter truck into a tall doorway.
If you dont go taller now, you'll regret it later.
My garage is 30' X 30' with 10' ceilings & two 7'H X 9'W doors.
Only the Wifey's door has an opener.

I wish I'd gone bigger in every direction.
I won't make the same mistake next time.

Yeah,....that oughta be about the right size.

Weve got definit limitations to work with here. The garage is under the bedroom section of a spit level home. The garage measures 28' x 36' outside dimensions. There will be two 8' wide OH doors and one 9' wide for the truck. The builder is estimating the finished ceiling height to be right at 8' 11" which is max...can't go any higher as the foundation is done and the correclation from the lower to upper levels has already been established.

I'd like the 8' high doors but don't want to do without the openers for the truck and wifes cars...don't need an opener for street machine. Were close enough here tolerance wise that we could possibly lose the possibility of openers if the estimated ceiling height is off say 2".

I got real lucky, contracted and paid for the new 28x40 garage to be built in May/June of '01... bought my baby in July...never thought to look at the truck height vs. garage door hieght... although I did have the presense of mind to change from three 9' doors to a 9' and a 16' door. Truck clears the door top by only 1 1/2 "!! No room to add more door height, 12" door header meets the trusses and still not enough room for my toys should have gone for the 40'x60'.

HUH?

I just put in a 30 x40 x14, have one 10 x10 door, one 12x12 door, both overhead, one 9x7 door framed, and one 12x13'6" framed in for future camper. Truck parks in 10x10, my tractor gets in the 12x12. Gonna put a loft above the 9x7 door frame this summer. Yea, I do wish I could have afforded to go bigger, but by going taller I can always add width.

Natstayl,
I was responding to Dakar when he said he should have built a 40x60 because of height, should have simply said you can go taller without going bigger.
I just tried to read the quote in my post, I somehow qouted twice ? sure makes it hard to read.

Its another building... pole barn beside the garage.
As far as tractor in basement, that would be nice, I could do alot of work on it there but I think I would have other probs... ... me thinks wifey would have major probs with the smell of solvent and diesel.

You too uh? I pulled the CTD in the basement exactly twice and the last time she said, "Don't you do that again."
