Folks with air horns........

Installed my Grovers 'bout two years ago.
Last night, while sitting in traffic, (yeah,...like that never happens in the DC metro area....right?) I gave a toot (more like a blast) to the yahoo in front who took a nap at a light due to his intense conversation on his cellphone.
I noticed that the compressor was running a looooooooooooong time to pump up the pressure. In fact the entire trip home (about 30 minutes) it never shut off.
Figuring my compressor was toast, I pulled it from it's hiding place and was going to start looking for its replacement when a little sticker caught my eye.
"Check the oil level every 2-3 months and refill with 30-40wt non-detergent oil."
Refilled the (empty) oil reservoir with oil and Voila.....it's working just like the day it was first installed.

A loooong post with a short moral..........Check the oil periodically in your air horn compressor.

What kind of compressor do you have? A little electric jobber that doesn't do anything but the horn?

got me one of them oil less compressors, teflon coated piston never needs oil also a good idea after a while of install to go through and check all the fittings for leaks, a good tighten and the system will hold on to its charge, lets not forget to blow the drain valve every now and then too.

The horns are mounted under the radiator core support.

Thanks fer the heads up Shovelhead I have the exact same kit and bought it from the same place too. I sure didnt see any sticker when I installed it been in there since October of 01 so I better check it out.

One other tip for horn installers is to make sure you point the horns down just a touch so water wont get in there and freeze.

Cheers, Kevin

Mine (1 big semi truck road horn) is mounted behind the cross member under the radiator. Can't see it unless yer under the truck.

I have no compressor yet. Just a 5 gal dot approved tank and solenoid. It still has over 90 psi in it, and I filled it over a month ago (and yes, the honr has been used several times on the road, and also to show people how loud it is. I fill it with my home air compressor when needed. it will fill the tank to about 125 psi.

I think I will do what TRCM did, but I am still looking into using CO2 as a source of air as well. Maybe I will get a chance to get to that in December.... Things are starting to back up lately.....

I just got tickled thinking about the horns being installed in "stealth mode" that was indeed so stealthy that the picture to show stealth mode was notable by its apparent absence of horns.

Either that or you were pulling our leg and the horns were lying in the bed when you took that photo.

This is very similar to my horn installed location.

Compressor

That's odd that with no oil it'll run like that? I went the oiless way (yeah problably won't last as long as the other one) but on this darn 05 3rd gen, there just ain't much room to mount it up right. I mounted my horn under the radiator, behind the front air dam. Looks good. I like the sound of the 15/13 inch horns, but I think soon I'll be upgrading to 24/21 inch horns. I want them to be a little deeper. I love the sound of an 18 wheeler. While my trucks not an 18 wheeler, I love having a deep horn.

Got mine from www.Groverairhorns.com
