Ever Wish a Trooper was There?

It was July 12,2003. We were towing our 5er through the town of Beaver Creek, Yukon, headed for Alaska some ten miles away. The posted speed was 50 km/hr (30 mph). The road was one lane each way with double yellow down the middle. This podner from Texas driving his Stroker 350, towin his Carriage 5er whas tailgaiting me through town. Suddenly ythis bloke in the Stroker gets an itchy right foot and puts the pedal to the metal. He wheels it across the double yellow, draggin the Carriage behind. Just then ahead in the approaching lane appears a vehicle. This gutsy guy keeps heading straight for the car. The car has no place to go but into the ditch. Fortunately there was 50 feet or more of nicely mowed shoulder.

Now the guy driving the auto throws a 180 and pulls back onto the road in a flash right behind the Stroker's Carriage 5er.

What Luck. It was then this auto lit up like a Christmas Tree and I saw letters R.C.M.P. painted on the side.

Only the driver of a Stroker could be that stupid.

Re:Ever Wish a Trooper was There?

If the guy thought he wasn't going to be on time while he was following you, he was really late after the mountie got done with him.(Checking drivers license, reg, have you been drinking, walk the line...) :

however I will add (with some hesatation) us canadians tend to look at our speed sighns diffrently... The sighn says 50Kmh we see 60Kmh... The sign says 100Kmh we see 110Kmh. whatever the posted limit is add 10 (we like to get away with as much as we can... ) I said this because I was down in Seattle once and noticed everyone followed the speed limit... exactly. I had always thought that was strange but I suspect there were diffrent enforcement rules down there.

Re:Ever Wish a Trooper was There?

In Calif. CHP Captain friend says they instruct CHiPs to allow +5 mph over posted speed. However, locals set their own rules.
When I am visiting Canada or any other country, I believe it is my duty to respect their laws.

From Sumas, WA to AK. I saw only one other RCMP on the highway.

Have to be careful here...The "Welcome to the town of Seneca" sign read at the bottom.."traffic laws strictly enforced". he he heh ehehee. I will hav eto look today to see if it is still on there. Hwy 11 here is real bad for the troopers. guys from Georgia get on 11 and run 65 - 70 and it is 55 and 45. Busted all the time. See 3 or 4 per day.

Re:Ever Wish a Trooper was There?

I wish there had been a trooper around on my way into work this morning when a guy in a Ford F-150 4x4 decided I was going too slow so he was just going to pass me on the shoulder. : Funny thing was....it was heavy traffic. All he succeeded at doing was moving up one car length in the line. He went flying around me only to swerve back into traffic and have to stop. Needless to say....all he could see in his rear view mirror from that point on was the hood of my truck.

It was a very rough shoulder....I hope he did some damage to his truck.

You probably saw more, you just didn't know it... They are really getting sneaky when it comes to the types of vehicles they drive. (little ford ranger pickups, full size vans etc full size chev pickups) and I think they should, gone are the days when you could spot a cruser a mile away...

Re:Ever Wish a Trooper was There?

2 weeks ago, traffic ground to a halt on a major road in DFW because of a semi wreck. Guy in front of me in an F-250 C/C 4x4 decided he was tired of stop and go on the freeway and crossed the grassy median to get to the service road of the highway. Soon as he pulled out into the service road traffic an officer was behind him with his lights on. That cop came out of nowhere. That made my whole day, watching this individual get pulled over

Don't you just LOVE watching other people get pulled over for being stupid. ;D

One of my favorites I saw on the highway in my home town. Most of the police cars in my (small) hometown are dark blue, with dark tinted windows, no light bars on top (lights behind grill and on rear dash generally) and often times unmarked. This particular car WAS marked on the sides, but coming from behind you wouldn't have suspected it to be a police car. The cruiser was in the left hand lane of the highway (running radar on the opposite side I assume) when a jacked up Ford Expedition got RIGHT up on his rear bumper and was flashing his headlights for him to move over (illegal in Texas). The officer kindly pulled over, let the gentleman pass, pulled back in behind him and on came the blueberries and cherries. Just made my day. I WISH I could have seen the look on the guys face as he passed the car and saw the words "Ferris Police" in big white letters. ;D

No, it's not...but I have my weaknesses. However, my first thought was to put the pedal down and make him STAY on the shoulder...but I managed to calm myself and settle for a nice, long blast from the horn and subsequent tailgating. :-

I got in trouble for blinding the car behind me in high school while driving my dad's pickup. Late at night on the way home from junior prom...some truck behind me tailgating and flashing his high beams...I reached down and turned the rears on and pretty much blinded him. He got mad and passed me and then took off. Told my dad about it and got scolded for turning the lights on. :-

Re:Ever Wish a Trooper was There?

Jamie,
I worked in toronto for a week...
motoring on the 401 doing 130K (80mph), I still had several cars suck my windows out as they flew past... there is NO regard for the speed limit there...

Re:Ever Wish a Trooper was There?

I remember flying down the 401 in my Plymouth Superbird at about 85 MPH and getting passed by more cars then I was passing.
One of the fasterst stretches of road in Canada is HWY 2 between Calgary and Edmonton.

I will also add that if someone wants to pass me going fast on the shoulder or over a double line into oncoming traffic, I will first think...What a moron. Then I think it could be a medical emergency or something else. Even if its not I will slow down and if possible move to the shoulder.
Its called defensive driving and I can't rationalize a morons' behavior but I can save my own hide and the folks in the truck with me.

I have a CB and a cell phone, if I see something like that I will call. More often then not I will see them up the road pulled over or in the ditch. I feel a lot better when I don't get fired up and tailgate them back or let the horn go...I'm just giving them my energy. Why waste it.

One time I called the RCMP and they called me back after they got the van stopped that I had to swerve to the shoulder to let through. They were at the hospital...where the guy rushed to get his wife there to give birth to their first child. I really wondered just how much time or trouble he saved by going crazy zig zagging down the road...probably not much and the other result could've been...a serious loss.

I would like to have a set of nasty lights for those folks that run with their hi beams on all the time behind me. :P
