I quit a job once when a previous employer who had to lay me off over a year earlier, found me and called me back. Even though I didn't really like the job I was leaving, I still gave them the remainder of the pay period, about ten days, worth of notice. They were really thankful for that and I left on good terms.

I also quit another job once when I was being offered a more interesting position doing something I really wanted to do and had trained for on my own time (solar installer). I thought I was really making a great career move...

The new company gave me less than two weeks' worth of work, mostly cleaning up a few projects they had neglected, and then just stopped calling me. It turned out that the guy didn't really need me for a full time position like he was offering, just a few small loose end jobs that his other employees didn't want to do. What a jerk! And an evangelical Christian to boot.

Anyway, that was scary, because I couldn't go back to my old job and I had a new baby in the house. I ended up making ends meet with odd jobs doing mechanicking and handyman work on my own, but it was a nervous time. I've been mostly self employed ever since.

I have been at my job for 16.5 years and I enjoy it. Layoffs, downsizing etc would never effect my job. Good pay and awesome defined benefit pension and my own self funded 401k and 457 plans!

My problem is I want to leave for a while (several months) too. I can't. I only have about 160 hrs vacation time..........which sounds like alot......but I don't want to burn it all up at once.

I want to become a full-time RVer and would love to get my feet wet by taking about 3 months and trying it out. I can't.

All I can do is wait out my time, get my (now 10 yo) son thru college, and retire comfortably in about 15 years at probably age 55. I know that is still relatively young. But, I am just dying to get out there and see our beautiful country. I can't.

I just have to settle and take alot of small local trips. I know I am blessed and really have nothing to complain about compared to most people.

But, my dad died when he was 44....... (im almost 41).....and I guess im just scared im going to die before I get to live my dream. Other than WINNING the lottery I don't have an answer to my dilemma.

I am at the point were I am only 24 but I just flat out don't know what or were I want to be. I have a job now as a assistant manger of a feed store that i have been working at since a freshman in high school. Now the place is up for sale and supposedly my job is safe i will just get a bigger promotion and pay rise but I am really nervous about the whole thing. On top of that I am just sooooooooooo un sure about things if my cow numbers were up by least 20 more cows I could just say too heck with it and start being at the ranch full time and playing when I want.

Not yet but there's always a chance.

I always tell myself that I was looking for a job when I found this one.

Yep, done it several times.
The last time, I was working at a Chrysler garage run by a couple of (insert your own words here) and finally had enough of their crap. Waited till quitting time one Friday, punched out, walked up front to get my measly little pay check, backed the truck in the shop, loaded up all five tool boxes, drove off and never looked back. A person can only take so much.

I once had a job working at a huge plant called Electrolux, they made washers, freezers, vaccums, ect. The pay was good but the environment sucked. I was working on the line assembling freezer panels that day for a guy who didn't show up(horrible job). Their was 4 line bosses and they all wanted you to do the work their own way. You were bent over for practically 8 hours a day, it was 100*+ in the factory. I just got fed up w/ the management so me and a guy that I worked side by side with punched out on lunch break told the boss(s) see ya and we never looked back.

I've been layed off twice, which is a real bummer because I liked the jobs. One job I was working at was through a temp service. I was welding and doing metal fabricating but they got slow in the winter months and layed all the temps off. The other job I had was servicing customers vehicles(mechanic work), I had shoulder surgey last year and left the job for a month and a half. When I was all healed up they said they didn't need me back any more. Oh well life goes on, I start college next month for the Medium/Heavy Duty Diesel program so im hoping to make a career out of that.

I've just up and quit my job before. My last job I work, before my current one with the railroad, I got tired of it one day and quit. I had a very mean boss. I think he had alot of problems at home and would take his anger out on us in the shop all the time. The day I quit, he was being a real jerk to me. Yelling at me everytime He came to check on my or if I went to ask him a question. I ended up getting tired of it and after he got done yelling at me the last time that day I told him "I quit" and then I walked out on him. I was only at this job 6 months before he lost me. I huess not long after that the other mechanic and some drivers quit for similar reasons. I loved the work I did but I couldn't stand the boss. I stayed unemployed for 8 months after that.I got alot done and took a nice break.

yup

8 years ago I quit a job that I had held for 17 years, just walked in and laid my notice on the bosses desk, She was dumbfounded. I had only worked for them for 18 months and was still in training , our 911 center was absorbed into the counties (yuck) and the people that were training me had less time in the hot seat than me and it burned me out to have them judging me everyday.

I am now a Union Electrician and while sometimes it has been tough, I would never go back.

I would give your 2 weeks notice, and while on your long vacation send resumes to those companies that interest you. Just my opinion, but good luck !

Eric

I have quit several times, but I always had a job lined up already. Some of the new jobs, I started right away, some I gave myself a 30 day hiatus.
The most important part of what has already been posted is to not burn any bridges. You have to matinain a good resume track record. Just dropping out looks irresponsible. Giving two weeks is best, and only use "immediate" for cause, that is a stated and documentable reason that things are too bad to work there.
If you are any good at your job, you would already have some feelers out, and some offers pending (the sort of offers that go "If you are ever looking for a job, let me know..." You should have several of those). If you haven't made your reputation, and don't have a living network of profesional aquaintances who can shoehorn you into a job, perhaps you need a few more years of work building up your rep.
One of the basic principles I lived by and taught my kids, was "1. Be responsible to yourself, your family, your employers, and 2. Never drop a job unless you have one waiting."
Worked for me, and I retired at 54.

Last one I quit on I was tired of being bent over by the management over hours, not to mention constantly ordering wrong parts. So I came in, loaded up my toolbox and told the manager on duty (who was late to work again that day, go figure) that I was out of there.

That place really teed me off.

Only when I moved to college, I gave over a month notice at my job and a few days before I was done they called me to the office and offered me alot of money to stay, but I did not want to work ther my whole life. I am glad that I turned down that offer because i know make almost twice that much a year and am not in a dead end job.

When I just changed jobs and moved halfway across the country after college I gave two weeks notice and they let me go after the end of the pay period, but I was prepared for it.

Just remember to never count your chickens before they hatch. It might get close sometimes but life has a crazy way of working itself out, but you have to help it sometimes.
