Economical .22 Rifle

Looking to buy a .22 cal rifle for myself and my son. Dont want to spend a ton but dont want junk either. I do want to mount a scope and put a sling on the rifle. I feel a semi-auto will probably be best. What is the best route to go and keep it under $300? Thanks in advance.

The Ruger 10/22 is a pretty solid semi auto .22 rifle. I've put lots of rounds through them with no issue. Are you looking for new or used? I'm sure you could find a gently used one for within your price range.

i have a marlin 22. its really a great gun! i've had it since i was 12 (11 years) as long as i dont let it get super dirty its works great, accurate little bugger too. its only 5.5 lbs and you can mount a scope. holds 14 rds. msrp on them is less than 200. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firear...Loading/60.asp

Well the marlin sounds like its in my range. I went to my local gun shop and found nothing used for less than $399! I was a little surprised. Looking for a new gun but not opposed to used. Just want to go rabbit or squirrel hunting without the .410. TOO LOUD! Plus my 5 yr old can only shoot it about three times before he has had enough.

I second the Ruger 10/22. I have put many rounds through them as fast as I can pull the trigger . .. sometimes with a helper loading the mags and they never jam.

Another vote for Ruger 10/22, I have one that I bought 2 years ago, it's seen a couple thousdand rounds so far and works like a darn.

I don't remember what the cost was but I bet you could get one for around that $300 mark.

Im with the others who said to buy a Ruger 10/22. I wish I had. I wasted my money on a Remington (597?) and it will sometimes jam.

I wish I had spent more money and got the Ruger. I have shot them before and they are nice.

Sometimes, "Cheap" is not a "Bargain".

Another vote for the 10/22!!!

A couple years back I picked up the "K" model (stainless with walnut stock and longer barrel) from Wal-Mart with a cheap 3x9 scope for about $250.

The Butler Creek HotLips 25 round mag and speed loader cost another $40, but that's just FYI.

I like my old guns...just me(like them when they still had wood stocks)...I would try one of the gun shows that come to your area. When I was growing up,dad gave me a old sigle shot brownie....OMG was that rifle accurate.Dad had semi automatic winchester, wow did that thing jam alot.I would stick with a bolt action with a 6 or 9 shot chip.

Another fan the 10/22. Look for nice clean model at the local pawn and gun shows.

I picked up a rare mint 10/22 International with scope used for $150 about 5 or 6 years ago.

Gotta love the Ruger 10/22. I've had mine for 14yrs and mounted a scope/varmit light on it for killing....varmits. Wal-Mart has them pretty reasonable but I can't recall the price. If I were to buy any other brand it'd be a Henry.

Yes the 10/22 is a fine rifle
but The Marlin Model 60 out of the box is every bit as accurate as the 10/22

I have a Marlin 60 thats 20 years old with 10k+ rounds thru it and it still shoots like the day I brought it home

You can usually find them for about $135-$160

with the price differance it should allow you an economical scope and rings
(Cabelas Pine Ridge,BSA, ect.)
for the same money as the 10/22 bare.

The only advantage I see to the 10/22 is its almost like Barbie for men.
(the AR-15 IS Barbie for men)
If you ever wanted to pimp out you .22 there is lots you can do to the Ruger

you can also look at the Savage stuff...
the fit and finish aint the best but they are VERY ACCURATE for the price.

as far as starting the boy out I would recommend a Bolt action.
The semi is great for Plinking and burnin up ammo but the bolt lends its self to more refined marksmanship in the long run.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with
