I also am very picky about who I will buy from. I don't require 100% positive if someone has hundreds or thousands of transactions, but I will still look and see what those negatives they had were and what the person who left the negative feedback said just to be as fair as possible. If they have any negatives with less than 100 transactions I will steer clear. Only time I had an issue was when I bought a BHAF and some oil and fuel filters from a guy and it took forever to get them shipped. He did make right, and he seemed legitimate with his responses after I wrote to him a couple of times. He admitted to really "dropping the ball" I didn't leave negative feedback, but I can't remember if I left positive or neutral.
For selling it's plain and simple......you don't pay, you don't get what I'm selling. I won't accept personal checks, only MO or paypal. Once I send I give a tracking number so they can see the item is in someone elses hands so if it is lost they won't try to claim I never sent it and everyone can get their $ back in the end.
With pickiness like that, you can see that E-bay isn't such a bad place like some people think.

I fully agree with this.

I went through e-bay with my claim for the turbo. Unfortunately I paid with a cashiers check because the guy wouldn't take paypal(First lesson). He had a crazy story about how he had been screwed by someone else using paypal and paypal wouldn't help him blah blah blah.....Luckily for me the guy screwed so many other people out of their money that E-Bay gave me $180.00 back out of the $700 or so I had lost. I chalked it up as a lesson learned and then talked to Tim Barber and he gave me a smokin deal on my HTB2. In the end I really didn't lose much but it still irks you when you have been had.....
One more lesson I learned was to always ask to see an actual picture of the item you are buying if you are leary at all. This guy only had a file picture he had copied from the BD Diesel site for a Super B turbo.
Third lesson is that if you are leary at all then leave it alone.... This happened to me also but I was on the other end this time. I have been trying to sell my friend's 6.0 Excursion for him as he has been shipped overseas. I listed it on e-bay and got a great price and a buyer who was very interested in picking it up the next day. I had clearly stated in my listing that the bank held the title and the money needed to be sent there. Well, the guy didn't pay attention to that and then he got real leary about the whole deal and even started talking about getting a lawyer because I shouldn't be selling somebody elses vehicle anyways! I just didn't want to deal with the hassle so I let the guy off without negative feedback. Now the market has tanked on these things and even though lots of people want them, the best offer I can get now is $5000 less that that first guy was offering. Worst of all is that I had asked my friend to find a way to get the title so I wouldn't have any problems. I guess I'm just too smart for my own britches.....

Another protection you can use is to pay with a credit card. If you have your payment set up through PayPal for your bank account you can click on "other payment methods" and choose your CC.

I have it using my debit card on paypal.

The guy finally responded this morning, saying he had a house fire, and is offering a full refund plus 25% if I reverse the feedback. I told him to put the money back and leave me positive feedback and then I would consider leaving positive, though he will get no better than neutral feedback.

Nothing gets my goat like sellers that withhold feedback to strong arm you into leaving them positive feedback. I have a list of about 10 sellers on my e-bay that I refuse to leave feedback to until they leave it for me. When I sell, as soon as I receive payment and it clears I leave feedback. It did get me once, I sold a model car to someone that got damaged by UPS and the guy left me negative feedback before he even e-mailed me or called me.

If you are leary of a seller, just pay with a credit card. They have fraud protection and will get your money back right away. I try to steer clear of people that only take money orders or checks.

Well he refunded my money today, and sent me an additional $25 as he said he would. Now just waiting on the feedback from him.

Well, the guy did what he said he would do! If you doubt he had a fire and is lying to save face ask him to email a link to his local paper to read about it!

If he did actually have a fire cut him some slack. If he's lying let others know to save them the grief you've suffered.

He may have sold his goods to someone local for a higher price, who knows?

In this case there is no choice but to leave neutral feedback. There was no completed transaction so positive is ruled out, yet your money was returned to you and then some so you can't really leave negative...I'd just leave neutral and say something like unfortunate events prevented a complete transaction.

It seems like he did have a fire or something understandable, cause he did pay $25 on top of the refund. I had already left negative feedback cause he didnt respond by the time I said, but did right before I was going to paypal. Not sure if I can reverse the feedback though.....definitely no positive to be left. But Im still not going to try changing it til he leaves me good feedback, which I deserve cause like yall said, I paid immediately and thats how it should work.

Well, hopefully he is gracious enough to leave you positive feedback. It's too bad that feedback can't be reversed.

I would not be surprised at all if he leaves you negative and you both have to mutually withdraw your feedback. Unless you dont mind having negative, then I would say let it alone. You cannot change your feedback for him, just add a note about any changes since you left your feedback. Good luck and keep us informed on how you make out.

Leaving feedback is the last thing you should do.
Theres no big rush to leave feedback.
If you dont get your item file a claim with Paypal and you will usually get your money back.
Sometimes people do have "Fires" and other stuff , theres alot of people on Ebay. And alot of diffrent things could happen.
Sometimes stuff does really get "lost" in the mail.
Once you leave feedback theres no changing it.
Wait until you have exhausted every ave. before leaving feedback.

True, I sent a cashier's check for a clutch and after 3 weeks I gave up.
