Duramax & Allison questions.

Ok guys I'm sorry I've gone over to the dark side and bought a 03 chevy with the Duramax-Allison setup. I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of Hp & Tq I could get out of the old girl, and I'm curious how much Tq & Hp the Allison will take.

My buddy has an 02 Duramax with the Bully Dog Triple Dog. He can't run it on the highest setting because it will instantly put his tranny in limp mode. I have no idea what the numbers are on that setting, but I don't think the Triple Dog adds that much power.

You can handle well over 600 horses with that transmission, but it needs some expert help and many parts to do so. They are designed for soft shifting and that translates into excessive friction and wear if they are powered up. No different than for a Dodge.

Otherwise, stick to no more than maybe 15% over the stock Duramax ratings and change the valve body to one from someone like BD-Power.

The one thing to watch is your fuel filter. GM offered an optional dual filter system, and that option or one of the aftermarket relocation and revision kits from someone like BD-Power is critical for proper operation and life of the injection pump on the Duramax.

600 on the stock allison?, remind me to tell the next trannies from stock trucks I see apart at the dealer my friend works at, usually eat the planetary sections up. No wonder they are a confused bunch tho, just look at the badges for the trucks, gm puts allison in front of the duramax, don't they know the motor is in front of the tranny?

Is it the black one from Drenkow?
I wondered if ya had traded your diesel for the hemi or if ya had moved and someone else moved in. My wifes parents live just down the block from ya and around the corner so I go buy almost every afternoon to pick up my boy.

There are a few good GM sites like this one for the Dmax I cant remember them now but someone will chime in. That Alli is a great tranie compared to the garbage in these dodges. If I had an Alli or the new 6 speed dodge tranie I probobly would be able to convince myself to keep this truck forever but I CANT STAND this junk 4 speed. Everyone on this site will tell ya that the Alli is junk and will break down if ya look at it funny but they forget so does there dodge tranies. To me the Alli is abought as good as it gets. There are tons of people making big HP and running it threw almost stock tranies. Those Dmaxes realy respond well to mods. Good luck.

I found one. I know there are a couple more.

Dieselplace.com is a good site to try. I also have 04 dmax. I've been told by several people that stock Allison is only good for about 40-80 hp above stock. Anything over that will decrease it's life span significantly.

bkrukow I traded the dark gray qcsb hemi for the red xcsb chevy that you meet on the road between sheldon and boyden almost every afternoon. I dont plan to do a whole lot to it just some bigger tires a leveling kit, 4" exhaust, lower hp tuner, cold air intake and maybe some tranny upgrades. I suppose I'll have to visit some other sites but I hope that the members here can help me out like they've done many times in the past without making you feel like an idiot.

stock dmax is 300 hp motor and 520 tq on the allison if you wanted to jump the hp of the motor i would get a hold of suncoast tranmissions and either get one of their built up allisons or send yours to them and have them build it for more tq and just a note that you are not aware of is keep an eye and ear on your injectors 2001 thru 2004 have the first style of injectors and they are prone to having problems i had an 02 completely stock and went thru 2 set of injectors and the truck only had 68000 when i traded it in from the dodge

I ran my '02 DMax (same LB7 as yours) on the 90 hp Edge setting for over 60k mi with no issues. Almost regret selling the truck because it ran so well, but the new Mga is pretty sweet too!
I didn't rod it much or tow heavy though. Bet I only turned it up to level 5-or 6 maybe 10 times to race someone.

How would you know if you have a bad injector, bad milage, sounds like the engines knocking, does it throw a code, etc. would be nice to know what to look for.

And I thought that the Allison was almost indestructable, guess I was wrong. I wonder if it will handle a 200hp programer just for sled pulling every now and then.

The allison is and extremely durable tranny, when built. The problem is when drag racing there something about the way it shifts and it binds up and will break, but you have to have a high 9 sec truck to do that. For sled pulling there great (if you stick it in one gear), they come stock with huge shafts.

exactly.

STOCK, they will limp before a dodge or ford tranny blows up. The allison doesnt have a prayer of holding more than 70-80hp more than stock with any sort of long term reliability.

ford tranny's easily hold the most power in stock form when properly tuned, no question.

the allison has by far the strongest stock hard parts though, so despite what everyone thinks and says/ASSumes, its the cheapest to build. I have like 2850 in my suncoast tranny and after 90,000 miles its never had a problem, built motor, twins, big single, couple hundred 1/4 mile passes/towing/dd abuse..all on stock hard parts.
