Down under

It has been decided, we are going to Australia next year for vacation. Always wanted to do this and now is a great reason, my daughter is going there to study fo a semester so my wife and I will go visit.

Anybody with experience on that side of the world? Been there done that?
Sugestions, advice?

TIA, Peter

Wish I was going. Had an GF from Wollongong?? all the pics looked unreal. Nothing like having monkeys in your backyard raiding the pool in summer.

I was fortunate enough about five years ago to travel to Aussie-land for a week.
My daughter had spent a semester studying in Tasmania, and the Wifey and I went Down Under to pick her up.
We visited Sydney, Melborne, and a little town called Deniliquin where we visited a family that we had met an a tour through Europe several years earlier.
The cities are clean, the country is beautiful, the people are super friendly.
(You're only a stranger until you meet them).
The flight is a loooooooooooooooooooooooong one, but the airlines feed you real well.

I'm jealous, it's the only place that I've visited overseas that I'd want to settle down.
(if it wan't for their insane firearms laws)

WOW,

It is a small world: My daughter is going to study at the University of Wollongong, and we are goint to "pick her up"

We are going to stay a bit over three weeks, with a short hop over to see the Kiwis, see Sydney, Melbourne, and Cairns.

I'll have to practice driving on the wrong side of the road soon so I can rent a car there. Now if I just can hold out till next June...

Thanks

If you can't fly first class, make sure you can stay comfy in the coach section. Remember, on international flights, liquor is free .

One of the IT's in my shop went there last year. I'll get some info from him.

I highly recommend the Gold Coast. You will be about 350-400 miles south of there. Brisbane is also great.

I'd live in australia if all of their animals weren't the world's deadliest. Plus they have really mean, creepy, spiders. I hate spiders. I hope they all die.

Went to Brisbane for a port visit a few years ago on the ship ... just like being in America except they all have a cool accent !!! The "Sheila's" really like US sailors there .

Tip #1: Don't ask anyone if they know the Crocodile Hunter ... they think he's a ****** !!!

Tip #2: Yes ... there are big lizards that will scare the bejeezes out of the tour horse you are riding. (I healed up fine and found out that I can ride a bronc the full 8 seconds )

Tip #3: Bring your camera and lots of film ... neat place, neat people.

I chat with a guy every day for an hour or so on CQPhone and we exchange a lot of pics and war stories. It is a beautiful country in the right parts,he lives in Victoria near Melbourne. The climate is great where he is but since they are upside down from us it is spring there now as we are heading towards winter. They set the clocks ahead when we set ours back so we have 16 hours difference in our time and it is difficult to be online at the same time any more.Just about everything is Diesel there)Ron G

Aussie AirPass = $999; actualy $1499 because it will be "shoulder season" and we will go outside " Zone 1"

Same thing on "business class" = $7560

First class = at $14K+ form me at least priceless.

So coach it is, but I expect that the sites and and memories will more than make up for the 15+ hours of discomfort (read that as 6'-3" with knees touching my ears), but "no wories mate" i'll make it.

Did any of you guys drive there at all? How easy/ dificult is it to keep to the wrong side of the road?

Driving there is quite easy just like in Britain. The hardest thing is moving out into the passing lane - - you have to re-learn the blind spot. Also, making a right turn is a bugger the first few times. Ride with someone for a day or two before taking off on your own. I drove Britain for about three months before heading for Aussie land, so I was somewhat accustomed to the craziness. Now, if you want to hear about roundabouts.....................
