Dodge 1500 4.7
Dodge 1500 4.7
Ok i just joined a forum for our 1500 and it isn't what i was hoping. i am looking at modding it but i have no idea where to start. anything will help. i do have the flowmaster 40 so its a good start.
Thanks,
p.s. should have got another CTD and not the 4.7 DOG

Don't think there's much out there for the 4.7 unlike the 5.7 or even the older 5.9 V8.
But a CAI, cooler thermostat and a aftermarket exhaust is a good start. And possibly changing the gearing.

I would stay away from the cooler thermostat, in general they tend to be snake oil as they prevent the vehicle from going into closed loop operation, basically your engine is running without any input from the o2 sensors and as such runs richer decreasing fuel economy and power. We aren't dealing with carb's anymore when a cooler engine equated to more power. However if you have a programmer that adjusts for a lower temp thermostat then you can gain power, but on a stock engine management program it will hinder you. CAI, headers, programmer, and exhaust will probably show some gains though.
Thanks for the input. now should i to a chip, a programmer, or a ECM flash? and which brand should i get. i am looking at a jet chip, intake, and 70mm TB. how does that sound for a start?
Thanks,
Thanks,
Try http://www.performancemarket.com/. They have alot of stuff that may help you. CAI, exhaust, throttle body, shift kit, plugs and wires, and a JET chip should get you about 40-50hp.
And if that ain't enough, you can add this to the equation and you'll be running with hemis all day.

I don't know if jet has improved thier products, but my dad had a jet chip on his (well mine now) '98 cherokee and not only did we have no noticable gain but after about 6 months it began having several driveability issues and finally would not start, we removed the chip and everything was fine. Also don't fall for the splitfire or other "multi electrode" spark plug gimmicks, lots of research has shown no advantage to them at all, just creative advertising. Remember there's no replacement for displacement, but a little positive pressure "ventilation" (read:supercharger) helps. The question that should be asked right now is how much power are you looking for and how deep are your pockets.

I had a 4.7 in a 2000 Dakota that seemed pretty good for the 6 days I owned the truck (thank you, uninsured illegal who rearended me!).

Thanks for the replies. i'm not looking to run with my CTD but i would like the truck to be faster. i am a firefighter so i pockets are empty from my CTD. This truck is hers so i don't want it to fast and i don't drive it so don't care if it is slow.
with that said i think i a going to stick with the CAI, TB, Cip/Programmer, and maybe Cam. that i am thinking will get it close to the Hemi. and if it looks like i will spend to much to make it that way i will just wait a while and get a new hemi with the life time Bumper to Bumper. Like i said thanks for the replies and anthing thing else would be great.
Thanks,
Eric

This was definately the case on the 5.9L gassers (like my old 01 Ram). Put a 160 deg tstat in it for pulling the boat in AZ in the summer. Truck still appeared to run fine, but got a CEL. Found out that as said above, the ECM doesn't quit enriching the fuel mixture (like a choke), until 180deg.

i hope i can put up with this one till i have the money to get another CTD. anyways thanks for all the feedback.
I had an 05 4x4 with a 4.7. Engine was a dog, but luckily I had a 6-spd in it. When it was stock it would put a 4.7 automatic to shame. When them 35's got put on, 6th gear didn't exist until after 75mph. It was a heckuva crawler though in the mud, could never get that truck stuck.
