Do we really need this?

From CNN: Smart Highways

Maybe if more money was spent on drivers ed and safer roads, we wouldn't need this type of system. I am perfectly capable of using my God given sensors (eyes and ears) to avoid accidents. This is taking technology too far. Tranportation Secretary Mineta says that this system will let "drivers concentrate on driving". I think it will have the opposite effect and alot of drivers would come to rely on a system like this and concentrate less on their driving, thus reducing their already diminished capacity to pilot a vehicle in a safe manner.

Sounds to me more like the "dumbing down of the people" to me. It should be used though. Think of it.............Just tell the cop after an accident "I couldn't hear the alarm and hit the fire truck BECAUSE the siren was too loud". That way you have even less need to take resposibility for your own actions.

Definitely a lot of better things out there to spend the money on. I can see bells and whistles spooking or making somebody nervous, before helping. They had a brainfart in our area a few years ago. They dumped a bunch of money into a de-icing system. I think it functions a couple times a season.

changing lanes and looking for traffic IS part of driving. rediculous. They should just go straight to developing auto pilot...... :

Re:Do we really need this?

This new technology is already beginning. In Vancouver, they're installing gizmos on public transit buses that allow the drivers to control the traffic lights... allowing them a clear path down a busy corridor. This makes the congested roads even worse at rush hour because vehicles back up even more at intersections causing more stress, idling time and fuel burnt.

IMHO these new systems they are developing and installing are leaving local Governments wide open to huge lawsuits... sensers imbeded in the roads or installed on poles along roadways are susceptable to the following; Bird crap, ice, road salt and other contaminates or debris... therefore allowing the potential for a serious mishap.

i'd rather rely on my own senses ( as few as i have) :

Just another example of government relieving society of any and all responsibility to be accountable for their own actions. >

Yea, I agree.... that's going a bit far... Even if you wanted to argue that it would help senior citizens - if they need the assistance, they should really not be driving. Your putting too much faith in machines IMO....

It'll never fly.
The insurance lawyers won't have anyone to sue when it causes a collision.

Picture a 9:00 rush hour, thousands of vehicles on the road, and the system decides to take a Dirt-Nap.

If MOST people would get their head out of their BUTT and pay attention to what they are doing, the goverment could maybe spend OUR money on things we REALLY need.
