Digital SLR's?

Would like to get the wife a digital SLR for our anniversary next month. I know next to nothing about them. What questions should I be asking myself in order to pick the right one and what questions should I ask of whomever I purchase it from? Anybody have one? I have heard of the Canon Rebel EOS but that is about it. What are your likes and dislikes about them?

Thanks,
~Rob

Everything I've read about the Canon is very good. At the price range you'd get for the digital Rebel EOS, you'd get a VERY good entry level DSLR.

The two top digital cameras right now are the Canon and Nikkon. Drawback on the Nikkon is the price of their lenses. Otherwise, both cameras perform very well.

I've talked to a few people at work who are into these things.
One individual said he has been looking at the Nikon D70. He liked it over the Canon Rebel EOS only because the shutter speed was much faster. After some web researching, I have found that Canon now has the Rebel EOS XT (aka 350D) model out that has a much faster shutter speed then the Rebel EOS. One individual stated that he likes CMOS capture devices (as used in the Canon) because they have a lower noise floor. Going to look at one tonight.

www.dpreview.com is your friend.

I've had three digital cameras (none an SLR, not ready to spend in that ballpark yet), all Canons. One of them is about 8 years old, and even though it's pretty much obsolete nowadays, it still works perfectly. And it was used heavily in documenting our house renovation.

I don't want Jack's camera, I would like my own

Seriously, I did check the website out that Jim pointed to (dpreview.com) and that is where I found out about the Canon Rebel XT (aka 350D elsewhere in the world). It is an upgrade over the original Canon Rebel, that is supposed to have a faster shutter speed and some other new things over the Canon Rebel. I compared the Rebel XT against the Nikon D70 and decided to go with the Canon. I also read reviews at epinions.com. I bought it at Circuit City today (18-55 mm lens). I hope she likes it. Next thing is to find a good class on photography. I need to check out the local community college and see if they offer anything. Also going to check Ritz/Wolf camera and see what they have.

I have never had a Canon Digital Camera.

However, I have had about 3 Canon printers in my life, and each one has been a huge headache. Drivers don't work, prints don't work, buttons don't work, etc...

I have also had 2 Canon 35 MM, and they too were both utterly terrible. One never worked right and I must have sent it into them 3 times, all under warranty. Bad battery, bad LCD screen, won't charge, won't work right half the time. Then they finally replaced it, after a lot of yelling and screaming, with one that they must have dug out of the garbage... It wouldn't even take pictures!

I would never buy another Canon product. Just my penny...

Holy cow. That's a bit like why I don't drive a GM.

I've had Canon printers, too, and I'll never buy anything else. Great output, and the ink refills are about the only ones on the market that are actually cheap enough to replace rather than just throw the printer away and get a new one.
