Essentially, I went with the D50 so i would have some $$$ to spend on some quality glass. I looked into the exact lens you're using Hohn, and about 3 - 4 months down the road I may pick it up. This camera came with the 18 - 55 kit lens, which is adequate for the shooting I need to do this summer, and a VR 70 - 250 Nikkor lens is around $275 but I'll leery of needing to switch lenses, I've done it before and it's possible I will again, but I would prefer the alternative.

I'm actually envious of Hohn's D200 as well, I was seriously considering it - and well, reality struck. Perhaps in a few years.

As to Cannon products, I really like them too, my sister just picked up an EOS 350 (digital Rebel XT) and it's a great camera too. I looked at the 30D as well, but again I ruled out models above $1k as I wanted some glass too. I guess since I had the ability, I decided to support a smaller company, I marginally preferred the ergonomics of the Nikon, I've used the same camera at work many times, and truth be told - I wanted to annoy my sister just a bit too!

There's not a "bad" D-SLR out there anymore. Any Leica, users on here?

I'll start posting some pix once I've gotten it out and about a bit.

d200 here. in all actuality, a d50 is more than the average person will ever need. i do tabletop studio photography and ive been able to enlarge a simple wrist watch face up to the size of a truck tire w/o any grain, noise, or distortion. and thats shooting at 10mp. even a 5 is more than capable. i work for a studio/lab as well and 99% of people never get anything over a 4x6. once in a blue moon someone will go up to an 8x10, and 11x14's are RARE.

what is better is a rather moot point. i myself an a nikon man, but to be honest, any major player is perfectly capable. just get what seems to suit you best. nikon has its little entry level DSLR's, cannon has their digital rebel which iv shot with. and i have several colleagues who shoot with cannon. you cant hold up a print and tell the difference.

Exactly. If I could have had my D200 at 6mp, I would have-- you just don't need that much resolution. I mainly wanted the other features.

I don't know of anyone who could see a realistic difference in print, even blown up to huge sizes, between 6mp and 8mp and 10mp or 12mp and whether a Canon or Nikon took the picture.

Get what fits you best and falls within your price range.

My second time shooting with the 20D I started using RAW, and have never looked back . Granted I do have PS so I can do the PP needed, and honestly working with a photo shot in RAW is night and day compared to the jpegs I shot previously.

Both formats have their advantages though, if you just want to rail off some quick pictures to show someone jpeg works fantastically, but in my mind if you plan on doing any PP at all RAW is the way to go.

Someday I'll set up some PP workflow and then RAW might be of use to me. Until then, I have a really nice point and shoot

Yeah, I wouldn't shoot RAW if I wasn't planning on doing stuff to it later, but I usually run it through PS to fix any white balance issues I may have, crop it a little, other little stuff like that. Lately i've been far to enthrawled with color selection, you can only have a black and white background with a color car so many times before it starts getting monotonous

Just saw this post. I have been using the 30D for about six months and love it. I started a couple of years ago with an Elan 7NE so I already had some glass acquired. One of my favorite pieces for the price is my 1.8 50mm. I also have 28-105 3.5-4.5, old 100-300 EF and 18-55 that came with the camera. I am saving up for the 70-200 2.8L IS and a good macro w/ ring light.

I have a 30D that came from B&H. It was used, but not a mark on it. The lens had a tiny mark on the plastic. With the extra batt, filter, CF card, ect... it was less then $1200. The armor is still on the camera, but, it has it's down falls. It's a pain change lens quick. also it can be an issue with a tripod. The primary reason is to protect the screen

I went with Canon because I have an Ellan 7eQD and lens that are about 9 years old. I couldn't afford to by new lens with a body. I looked at the Rebal XTi but could not stand how the body felt. It was uncomfortable grab and hold.

The remote is an annoying deal for me. The 7e uses an IR remote that cost $30. 30D is RF and cost over $300. The aftermarket is $250.

OK, here's a link to a recent pic I took that I like.

My daughter was getting her first haircut and quite traumatized by the whole deal. This shot really captures the mood.

EDIT: sorry, but I have to stick the pic in here as I can't get the link to work..

Okay I'll drag this topic back up and offer a few more things realted to pictures. First, I found a very good independant site that's one photographer sharing his years of experance and wisdom. Very good advice, especially how he continually states "camera dosen't matter." He's also a car guy and likes them cheap, so his advice on buying and mainting cars is cool too. It's at www.kenrockwell.com I especially like his use of, and emphasis upon color in his photos. Many "professional" phots seem drab and dreary these days.

Secondly, I picked up a used Nikkor 24-120mm lens with autofocus capabilits. It's F3.5 - 5.6, and for $295 used in excellent shape without a nick on it, it's worked out well. It's marginally larger (and quite a bit heavier) that the kit 18 - 55 lens. The new lens is 35mm equivelent. So far so good, I think I'll hold off buying anything else until an 80 - 200 F2.8 lens is within reason. I actually saw one of these, with a D70 included, on ebay selling for around $925 recently. Considering the lens alone is well over 1200 new, it would have been a steal.

Someday I'll get some photos up, but for now, I just added a few of my truck this fall with the new camera to my user area. Have a good one!
