Difference in 1500 and 2500

I've got a 98 QC 1500 with the tow package and I was kinda curious what all I would have to swap out to be able to slap a cummins in. The suspension will need to be beefed up but what all other kinds of stuff would I need to change? I know they use the 360 (same engine I've got) in the 2500's so would the Cummins bolt up the tranny too? I'm considering the Cummins swap quite a bit. Just didn't know how much I would have to swap out to put a Cummins in there with the tow package. Thanks for all help.

I highly doubt the tranny would not stand up to the Cummins. The torque would eat it alive. Frame would be much the same but defiantly the front end would need some serious help

I don't really have much experience with the cummins but I'm gonna say just for starters I would need a new frt/rear axle, 5spd tranny, suspension. Any other MAJOR thing that I would need?

Don't do it. You will spend more time and money to make it work than it would be worth. There is very little difference between the 2500 and 3500, but there is a huge difference in the 1500 and 2500. You would need a D60 front end, D70 or D80 rear end, you would need an NV4500, NV5600, 47RE or 47RH transmission, transfer case (assuming 4x4) you would need different springs, motor mounts, pcm, frame strengthening modifications, and by the time you are finished you will still have a 1500.

Now if you wanted to put a 4 cylinder Cummins in there, thats a different story..... There are several threads floating around here about that..... It is significantly lighter and has less power in which some things could be left the same.

Thanks for the info. I'm not gonna do it. You guys are right. I'd be better off with just buying a 2500.

Thaks for all your help.

Someone on CumminsForum.com brought up an interesting point. Would a 4bt bolt up to the tranny I've got now?

I hope it does. Then all I'd have to do is swap the engines out.

that would be cooool... a 4cyl cummins 1500. with it's lighter weight, it'd probably get 25-30 mpg

Don't knock a good 305 chevy.

Mine always pulled good (never lost) but it wasn't stock but 11-12 MPGs really sucked, then again my foot was always on the floor board and the 4 speeding tickets in a year prove that.

I'm not.

I'm just going to prove a point. He thinks that just because it has 4 cylinders that his can outpull it. He doesn't think that Diesels can produce more torque than gassers and thats what i'm gonna prove to him. If I don't strip the gears out of my tranny doing so...........
