Diesel Smoke (Report from NASA)

Well guys, this morning on the radio, we've been blamed for helping ruin the Eco System. I didn't catch the whole blurb, but what it amounts to is that some inviro group is saying diesel smoke is causing the earths ice deposits to melt at a faster rate. I didn't get the name of the group, but they apparently have NASA agreeing with them. If I can find more, I'll update................

Diesel soot leads to warming: NASA

In today's Traverse City Record Eagle from the wire services:

Washington-Soot mostly from diesel engines is blocking snow and ice from reflecting sunlight, which is contributing to "near world-wide melting of ice" and as much as a quarter of all observed global warming, top NASA scientists say.
The findings about the snow and ice albedos-their power to reflect light falling on the surface-raise new questions about human-caused climate change from the Arctic to the Alps.
"We suggest that soot is a more all-around 'bad actor' than has been appreciated," NASA scientists James Hansen and Larissa Nazarenko wrote in a paper published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Found this today and thought you guys might like to read it, too. I'm filing this information away with the others that say that coffee and peanut butter cause cancer. I'm still inclined to think that the "global warming" that we are experiencing is part of a natural earth cycle. I'm not saying that vehicle emissions are a good thing, just that they are not as harmful as the tree huggers would have us believe.

Next time some tree hugger opens thier mouth about how bad diesels are, shove that in their face.

Re:Diesel Smoke

On another note, wild fires and volcanoes produce tons more soot and bad gases than our diesel engines.

I would be fine with that, as long as they jump in it.

Re:Diesel Smoke (Report from NASA)

I think that we, as responsible citizens, and mostly owners of four wheel drives, should help the tree huggers out. Just think, a CTD 4wd longbed can hold say, 18 tree huggers. We could volunteer to deliver them to the forestry service the next time there is a wildfire in California, (plus we would not have to drive far to deliver most of em). Each tree hugger could pick a tree, hug it till the fire passes, thusly protecting the trunk from fire damage and saving the tree. Then the wolves would have free BBQ to eat and could leave the furry little bunnies alone for a while so that they could be at less stress to procreate.....

Just think, we could, as responsible citizens, resolve the clashes with tree huggers, then politicians and who knows where it could end up???

Darwinism at it's greatest!!!!

Boy what a week for huggers here. Between bunnies and smoke they are just workin overtime.
What's next they gonna string up ol' santa clause for cruelty to Reindeer.
I'll bet they are even gonna make demans for parachutes on flying reindeer
prolly gonna have to cancell christmas anyhow, to much diesel smoke at the north pole is causing the elves to get sick.

I wonder how many tons of bad gas is released every time NASA sends up a rocket? Pun intended

Re:Diesel Smoke (Report from NASA)

Guys - You do realize that NASA and the 'tree huggers' aren't personally saying you're responsible for global warming, right? The article says it looks like diesel exhaust particulates could be a player and it bears looking at it more closely. Yes volcanoes put out pollutants and all that but consider the number of diesel engines running 24/7 all over the planet and if there is some easy way to address a problem they may generate, it could be important. I don't know that that's the case but I also don't think it's ridiculous to consider it. It's true global warming could be just a natural situation that a whole bunch of scientists are misreading. It's also true that we could be heading toward bigtime trouble down the road for our kids that will only be worse if we ignore what is going on.
Before folks jump all over me, do notice there's a lot of 'could' and 'maybe' in all that. It would be nice if science could be all neat and tidy with definite answers to everything but that's not the case. Science is still the best way we know of to solve problems. For my money, I know NASA has the occasional screwup like we all do, but they seem to get an awful lot right and when they say stuff, I tend to listen.

Re:Diesel Smoke (Report from NASA)

UH, did NASA say that or a scientiest who works for NASA. There is a vast difference. When you here something that does not instantly jive with what you know, you need to look at the person saying it, what groups do they belong to and what is their agenda.
Maybe, since forest fires emit tons of particulate, kills wild life along with endangered spiecis (?sp), and MAY even cause the polar ice caps to melt, we should be clearcutting to prevent this. Sounds reasonable when doing it for the safety of our enviroment and kids right. We could even make a nice grassy park where the forests once stood for our kids to play in..OOops... grass can burn to? Hmm... maybe we'll have to get rid of grass also (the mowing kind LOL).

Its an endless cycle for these ID 10 t's. Starting to reconsider on the late term abortion thingy... maybe cut it off at say 35 years or so?

Yeah, how about all the shuttle fuel that's dumped into the stratosphere over the poles. Doesn't that add to global warming?
