Dealers ARGHH
Dealers ARGHH
I need to purchase a new 1/2 ton company vehicle, need to get 3 bids. Don't really care what brand. Trading in 6 year old truck. I need an invoice for company to cut a check against, that amount of money requires 2 signatures on check and will take a day or 2 to get signed. Why dont the dealers understand this process, I can't be the first company to go thru this. All they want to do is pressure me into buying a new one at that very moment on credit. My company does not finance anything. I hate buying from dealers! I would almost rather keep the present truck but our "Reserve Study" and long term equipment replacement plan process says to replace now. Am tempted to walk into next dealer with a little bit of an attitude, tell them this is how I want to execute this deal, do you want to play my way or do I move on, plenty of dealers in Phx area to choose from. Just dont have the time for games. Sorry for the rant but dang, this should not be that difficult, especially when paying cash.
Attitude works for that situation. We went through the same stuff trying to buy road vans for our crews a few years back. Tell them how the deal will work, and if they don't want to play ball, walk out. You could also call first to save yourself some time. It is maddening that they won;t take cash for the trucks. I don't understand how some dealers can be so pushy/stubborn.
I get that they make less money on a vehicle that is not financed, but I always thought less money was better than no money. If they can't sell the truck and make enough money on the price without financing, then the price isn't right to begin with. The greedieness they show is amazing.
Part of the problem may be that you are talking to the wrong person or not using the correct process. Government and big business do similar transactions all the time but they submit a bid packet or Request For Proposal that has all their terms detailed in it. John Q. Salesman never deals with those transactions I would guess. You might get better results if you put in writing:
- what you want to buy (1/2 ton, 4-door, V6, etc)
- what your trade-in is (year, make, model, miles, condition, availability for inspection, etc)
- what your payment terms are (company check within 3 business days of receiving an invoice)
and then fax, e-mail, or mail it to your selected dealers with a response deadline. I'd bet that most dealers have a behind-the-scenes office that knows how to handle those types of requests where the salesmen don't.
Good luck with the new truck.

I suggest you call ahead and ask to speak to the fleet manager...sometimes they are in need of someone like you to get another vehicle into a fleet purchase which is a win win for everyone. If that does not work, the new vehicle manager or owner are always wanting to see the tail lights of a vehicle.
I think they call it turn and earn. Blow out a vehicle and they earn another from the manufacturer.
Our City asks for tenders on equipment all the time, even for one vehicle to replace one that has failed. Maybe that way will work. Submit a request for Tender with the details on your letterhead.
