Custom Stereo

I was wondering if anybody has done a custom stereo install in their CTD. I am planning on doing an install and the stereo shop recommends using two yellow top batteries and farad cap with the use of multiple amplifiers. Is the stereo shop trying to increase its overhead or is it legit?
I also was wondering if this is overkill considering the CTD already has two deep cycle batteries and a heavy duty alternator? For those who are electrically gifted, is it visible to just install a larger farad capacitor (say 3 farad) and use heaver gage wire throughout entire install? How about recommendations for types of wire, including manufacture?
Finally, if you have any pictures of a extend cab or quad cab install would you please forward them. I am running a little short on creativity.

Re:Custom Stereo

I've got a semi custom stereo in mine. Read the sig. I'm still running the stock batteries without a cap. I need to get at least one cap though since my lights are starting to dim. My stuff hits pretty good. I'm building a bigger box as we speak that will fit underneath the back seat. Go and do a search for "I got my new dash" or something like that in the OTHER forum. I started it. It has the plans for the box and I think some pics of the finished installation. I doubt you need two yellow tops. Unless you are doing a HUGE stereo system. I'm still debating on installing a set of higher powered 12's in mine. I'm not sure yet. I'll wait and see what this box sounds like before I make my decision.

Pioneer CD deck with 8 disc CD changer under the driver seat.
One 400 watt four channel Crossfire driving two 160 watt 6x9's in the front doors and two 120 watt 6 1/2's in the rear doors. One 300 watt two channel Crossfire driving a 10 inch DVC bandpass on the back seat. The two crossfires are stacked up under the passenger seat.
Look in member photos under dieseldude4x4's pics and hobbies to see the amps and a few others. It'l rock your world for sure. My son and I put all of this in and basically abandoned the stock system.

Re:Custom Stereo

actually yellow tops are recommended for the basic truck now instead of red tops. I upgraded my reds to yellows after the reds failed twice

Re:Custom Stereo

my brother will run single aut gauge wire which is 1/0 gauge. To the distribution block and the 3.5 farad cap then run the 3 amps off that. then he will run off the other battery another 1/0 to power the tv's and cd player and dvd. its gonna be all audiobahn. Its the 3rd bad [cen] setup he has done. ;D

Re:Custom Stereo

Just run 1/0 gauge( thats not 10 gauge it 0 gauge but if you try to look for its under 1/0) and run a 2 farad cap and you will be fine dont worry about getting a different alt. or different batts.

Re:Custom Stereo

if you go with yellow tops there is absolutly no need for a cap as the yellow tops have the same ESR (equivlent series resistance) as a cap and will give power bursts just as quickly

and for all that goes the only reason for adding a cap or yellow tops is if you have power supply problems such as dimming

I'm currently running 1400 watts to my subs and 300 watts to my front stage from 3 soundstream rubi 702's with an all stock electrical system, including batteries, and have ni light dimming or any other power supply problems

try it with the stock electrical first, if you got problems then upgrade
Re:Custom Stereo

My humble opinion us that they are trying to line their pockets. With your plans and our trucks there is no need to upgrade the electrical on them with your plans. My truck yes but for what you run no. I run the optima yellow top batteries. As for caps they are snake oil to me. I don't see the need for them concidering they only hold one hit to say so basically your subs hit the cap is done and your back to batteries. My opinion is caps unless running a large series are a waste. Our trucks can easily support a head unit,2 amps and 10" subs with no dimming or nil dimming 12 you will start to pull. When you add amps , air ride, compressors, lights it gets to draw pretty good.

Re:Custom Stereo

With the setup I have currently, my lights just barely dim. It's almost undetectable. We'll see how it goes when I upgrade the 12's and throw an amp on the door speakers.
