Coast Guard C-130 and Marine AH-1W midair collision

Don't know if anybody has seen this but last Thursday night, a Coast Guard C-130 and a Marine AH-1W attack helicopter collided off the coast of California near San Clemente island. The CG C-130 was on a search an rescue case looking for a lost boater. The Marine AH-1W was flying with 3 other Marine helicopters as part of a training exercise.

There were 7 personnel on the C-130 and 2 Marines in the helicopter. So far none of them have been recovered.

The search was suspended as of this morning :

Sad day for both the Coast Gaurd and Marines

That's been on the news here. God Bless the lost souls. Is there some type of protocol in the C.G. dictating air authority during search and rescue?

I'm not sure who would have authority, or if there is any sort of protocol. I'm not in the aviation field (yet).

their IFF should have caught it or at least air traffic control. Unless there was a transponder failure.
