No different than a manned helicopter with the same optics. The only exception is that a manned helicopter is much heavier, carries much for fuel, and requires human intervention in case of an emergency. A drone (helo or fixed-wing) - especially of the commercial type, monitors every parameter imaginable and can detect if it needs to depart to emergency air space - or can be sent on an emergency mission by the pilot.
I personally don't mind the use of drones and I think the eventual cost savings will eventually start trickling down to tax payers.
I do see the other side of illegal use of drones. There are bad people out there that have cruel intentions and if I caught someone spying on me or my family, I will either have a new toy (probably after repairs) or there may be a funeral in that persons future - or both.

Wait till you get home and catch the police peeping through your upstairs bedroom window with a silent electric drone at your wife or girlfriend because someone said he heard the dog barking and he wanted to make sure she was OK, or a sleazy private investigator is trying to catch you mowing your lawn in your own back yard surrounded with a nice high block wall as you are lying in your lounge chair drinking a beer, its view is being bocked by the sun.
Or think of all of the pictures the scumbag paparazzi will be able to get by being able to look over the private walls and be able to peer into bedroom windows with remote controlled high definition cameras.
I have no doubt the drones will be used for the wrong reasons.

Jim,
I understand where you are coming from, but what you just described has been available for years. Heck you can go to your local hobby store and buy one that has a video camera on it already. Buy a more robust one, you can add your own video device and autopilot with electronics to relay the video back to you.
I'm sure the ruthless paparazzi already use something like that.
Everything has flaws. Have you seen all the incidents with manned aircraft.
Drones have built in safety features, software problems or not, a military or local law enforcement version will not go on its own man-hunting mission and start firing on its own.
The issue is that there are too many people that will jump at the chance of anything they don't like and start spreading their agenda like wildfire. Then of course news outlets love anything involving controversy or twisting the truth on something good. So people form an opinion based on what isn't true.
One of the articles mentioned something about the fear of these things being used to catch speeders. Here's the deal with this - manned aircraft do the same thing, but here's the catch - the one catching the offender has to be the one to issue the ticket. If you are a thief, you have no right to privacy.
Like I said though, I will be the first to cause havoc on anyone or anything that I catch invading my privacy - then again, if you aren't doing anything wrong then there is nothing to worry about.
This is a pretty interesting discussion.

1984, by G. Orwell, Logan's Run, a bunch of recent movies I forget the names of....It's all starting to happen, folks....
I don't have a problem fighting crime, but this kind of stuff eventually turns everything into some kind of crime or taxable event...
Shooting them down will show send a message and you thought the enemy was the only one with those rocket launchers.
I see it as the government just creating more problems for teh regular guys....

Drone Spotted Near JFK Airport by Pilot
The Federal Aviation Administration is looking into a report by an Alitalia pilot who said he saw a "small, unmanned or remote-controlled aircraft" on final approach to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
